The Rotterdam School of Management Erasmus University (or RSM) is an international business school located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The renowned business school of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, RSM offers a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes taught mostly in English including a top-ranked MBA programme, senior management seminars, and a PhD programme. RSM utilises its location in the commercial heart of Europe and its core Dutch values of openness, tolerance and flexibility, as a platform for its primary focus – the development of leaders in global business.

The Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University has been ranked among the top 20 best business schools in the world by The Wall Street Journal international rankings. The Financial Times has ranked RSM as one op the top 10 European Business Schools. RSM has achieved Triple Crown Accreditation from AMBA, EQUIS and AACSB, and is part of the respected consortium of Europe's leading school's and corporate partners - Community of European Management Schools (CEMS). RSM is also a member of the Partnership in International Management (PIM) network. History

Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University first opened its doors in 1970 in an elegant villa in the suburb of Kralingen, Rotterdam. From these humble beginnings, RSM has grown into one of Europe’s most successful and internationally-recognised business schools, as reflected in the rankings of international media such as Financial Times and Wall Street Journal.

Erasmus University
The roots of RSM stretch back to 1913, and the founding of Erasmus University (then the Dutch School of Higher Commercial Education). Originally a business-oriented institution, the Dutch School of Higher Commercial Education was a private initiative established with the support of the Rotterdam business community.

The idea of establishing a separate field of study dedicated to the subject of ‘business administration’ surfaced in 1964. In 1966, Erasmus University (then the Netherlands Institute for Economic Science), commissioned an investigation into the feasibility of founding a Graduate School of Management. The result, inaugurated in 1969, was the ‘Interfaculteit Bedrijfskunde/Graduate School of Management’, a joint initiative of the schools of economics, law and social sciences of Erasmus University, and the schools of civil, mechanical and maritime engineering and general sciences at the Delft University of Technology

Graduate School of Management
The first 30 students began classes in the innovative two-year ‘Post-kandidaats Programme’ (equivalent to a master’s) at the Graduate School of Management in 1970 – then situated in Kralingen, Rotterdam. The school became the first in the Netherlands to offer the degree “Doctorandus in de Bedrijfskunde” Post-kandidaats (equivalent to master’s-level), for students with a university qualification in a non-business discipline.

In 1972, the school moved to new premises in Delft, and once again was remodelled, this time as the Interuniversities Institute for Business Administration (‘Interuniversitair Instituut Bedrijfskunde’ or IIB). It had only one division, the ‘Interuniversitaire Interfaculteit Bedrijfskunde/Graduate School of Management Delft’. In November of the same year, the first 29 students graduated with the new academic degree ‘Doctorandus in de Bedrijfskunde’ (Drs.). The alumni association was formally established this same day: the Alumni Association VIB, the ‘Vereniging van afgestudeerden van de Interfaculteit Bedrijfskunde’.

Internationalisation
In 1975, the curriculum was revised and, from 1977 onwards, the focus turned towards the internationalisation of the school. The first exchange programme was established in 1980 with the French Institut Supérieur des Affaires, visited by IIB-students Hans van der Laan and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rino_H._C._Schreuder Rino Schreuder] . The second exchange programme was established with Wharton in 1986. The number of English-language modules with an international focus expanded. In 1984, the four-year ‘doctorandus’ programme was launched. The first European CEMS master’s degree was conferred in 1991, a result of RSM’s assimilation into the prestigious CEMS network.

In 1986 the Graduate School of Management Delft was moved back to the premises of Erasmus University, and re-named the Faculty of Business Administration. The doctoral programme was established in the same year. In 1993, the ERASM research school was founded, bringing together researchers from the Faculty of Business Administration and the School of Economics. Known today as the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM), it has since become one of Europe’s leading management research facilities.

In 2003, the international bachelor programme (IBA) was established – an English-language programme with a recruitment target of 50% of students from outside the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, in 1966 a consensus on the lack of suitable training and higher educational facilities for managers in the Netherlands, spurred Dutch-based multinationals including Royal Dutch Shell, Unilever and Philips to establish the Foundation for Business Administration, an institute for postgraduate management education, later the Rotterdam School of Management.

In 1985, the Rotterdam School of Management launched its now famous and highly-successful International Fulltime MBA programme, initially offered in both Dutch and English. In 1986, the ‘Post-kandidaats’ IMSEC exchange programme was absorbed into the MBA and a new IMScEC ‘doctorandus’ programme was launched.

In 2003, RSM joined with four top school’s located in three continents to create the Global Executive OneMBA, the world’s first truly global MBA programme.

In 2004, Rotterdam School of Management merged with Erasmus University's Faculty of Business Administration and the Erasmus Research Institute of Management to become Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM). Bolstered by the complementary resources of each institute, the newly-merged RSM has since gone from strength to strength.

In 2006, the MSc General Management was established – a new master’s for non-business graduates. The school has continued to internationalise, today claiming a place amongst the most international schools in Europe. In 2008, the school welcomed a new dean, George Yip, a highly-successful and internationally-established academic and corporate guest speaker with twelve years business experience. Dean Yip has major strategic plans for the school, all of which are designed to move RSM into the top-tier of school’s in Europe by 2012.

Bachelor of Science programmes

Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration

RSM’s Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration is an international bachelor programme that lays the foundations for a successful career in global business. Offered to a select and international pool of students, this first-rate programme has a broad, multi-disciplinary curriculum that enables the pursuit of any career from entrepreneurship to global management. Students benefit from long-established connections with nearby multinationals, and learn from top faculty who are members of RSM’s research institute (ERIM) – one of the top institutes in Europe. With 45 different nationalities represented in the IBA classroom, this programme offers a unique environment. IBA students are constantly challenged by differing perspectives and contrasting ideas, as well as the need to communicate across cultural difference. MSc Business Administration

The Master of Science in Business Administration (MScBA) programme offers the broadest selection of specialisations in the Netherlands, allowing students to tailor their skills to their career of choice in the international marketplace. To be eligible for this programme, students must have a university bachelor in business or management.

MSc General Management

This programme is an advanced master’s programme specifically designed for bachelor graduates from other disciplines (engineering, science, the arts etc) looking to expand their career options or make the switch to a career in business or management. This unique programme fuses knowledge gained in previous academic fields, with crucial skills and knowledge in business and management, resulting in a highly-marketable and specialised qualification that crosses disciplines.

MSc International Management - CEMS

Ranked as the second best masters in management in Europe by the Financial Times in 2007, the CEMS master’s programme is a unique degree offered across 17 of Europe’s top business schools, the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS). The programme offers a semester abroad at a renowned partner school and an international internship. MBA programmes

International Full-time MBA

RSM’s full-time International MBA programme is consistently ranked amongst the top MBA programmes in Europe. Taught in English over 15 months, the programme is aimed at earlier stages in management careers, and seeks to transform early business experience and ambition into management knowledge, skills and leadership abilities. A key goal of the programme is the delivery of behavioural transformation in participants. A year-long personal leadership programme runs alongside the curriculum that focuses on developing leadership abilities in a complex environment. To achieve this, the programme capitalises on its exceptionally diverse study body – around 50 different nationalities and a broad range of industry and educational backgrounds – and a range of innovative teaching methods such as networking monitoring, featured in BusinessWeek. Participants emerge with the skills to think critically and creatively about the most defining issues in global business, as well as the personal skills to connect, inspire, motivate and influence across diversity. The curriculum includes an internship and electives, as well as the possibility of spending an exchange semester abroad. Content reflects a European perspective, with an emphasis on themes like diversity, entrepreneurship, sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Students' average age is 29 with an average of 5.5 years of professional experience.

Global Executive OneMBA

RSM’s Global OneMBA is one of the world’s first truly global MBA programmes. Designed for senior executives, this unique modular programme is the creation of five premier business schools located in Asia, Europe, North America and South America. The programme is taught in English over 21 months and includes four week-long residencies. Participants receive an MBA from their home university, and the OneMBA issued by the five partner schools. OneMBA offers participants the opportunity to experience business through the lens of the world’s most important economic regions, making it unparalleled in its development of leadership skills, networks, and knowledge of global business. Participants can apply for admission at the partner school most convenient for them. English is the common language used for all OneMBA courses and communication.

Executive MBA

RSM’s Executive part-time MBA programme is designed to be as challenging and transformative as the school’s full-time MBA programme, while allowing working professionals to continue with their careers. Conducted part-time over 2 years, the programme is taught in English every second weekend, with a one-month practical project and a week-long international tour. Students learn through real-world consulting projects, case studies, workshops, coaching and mentoring, lectures, international study tours, and teamwork. Research degree programmes

MPhil Business Research

The Master of Philosophy in Business Research is specifically designed for academically talented and motivated students who would like to combine education in a specialisation area of their choice with the challenges of undertaking research in that field. The overall focus of the MPhil in Business Research is on the development of academic competencies and skills within a specific field of management. The maximum admission of 30 students a year facilitates both customisation of the program and a strong individual supervision, thus enabling a distinctive personal approach for this Research Master Programme. ERIM MPhil in Business research is officially accredited by NVAO, the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation.

PhD Management

The focus on research methods and techniques makes this research master programme a perfect preparation for a successful subsequent PhD study in management or business at a top international business school or functions in staff departments of large companies, consultancy firms and institutes for applied research. The PhD Programme in Management is an advanced four-year international programme designed to train future researchers in one of five key fields of management: Business Processes, Logistics & Information Systems, Organisation, Marketing, Finance, and Strategy. The first year is mainly devoted to course work and the writing of a dissertation proposal, whereas the remainder of the Programme is almost fully dedicated to the dissertation research. Currently about 100 students from more than 15 countries are enrolled in the PhD programme. Together with the students from the MPhil in Business Research they form the student population in the five fields of research of the ERIM Doctoral Programme. Jointly they create an energetic and stimulating work environment of young students with diverse backgrounds and nationalities.
