Symphony No. 30 (Haydn)

The Symphony No. 30 in C major (Hoboken I/30) is a festive symphony [Antony Hodgson, "The Music of Joseph Haydn: The Symphonies". London: The Tantivy Press (1976): 57 - 58. The author places this symphony in Chapter 2, "The Early Festive Symphonies"] by Joseph Haydn. The symphony was composed in 1765. It is sometimes called the Alleluia Symphony because of the use of a Gregorian Alleluia chant. This Alleluia chant is sometimes confused with the melody in the finale of Mozart's Symphony No. 41 in C major. The work is scored for flute, [Hodgson (1976): 58. "Haydn adds a flute in the slow movement and in the first of the two Trios of the Minuet-Finale. Clearly it requires a separate performer, since at one point it plays together with the two oboes; why he should have to remain silent throughout the first movement is, however, rather a puzzle."] two oboes, bassoon, two horns, trumpets, timpani, [H. Discography

In the LP era, no recording had a reconstructed timpani part. [Hodgson (1976): 58, footnote.] This includes Antal Doráti's recording with the Philharmonia Hungarica.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Concentus Musicus Wien on Teldec pair this symphony with No.s 53 and 69. Nicholas Ward and the Northern Chamber Orchestra on Naxos Records use a similar pairing: No.s 55 and 63.
