Local Hospital Affiliations

The local hospital in Oranjestad, Aruba is Horacio E. Oduber Hospital. The history of our hospital goes back to 1920 when the Dominican Sisters founded the first hospital in Aruba. (San Pedro di Verona).

The first hospital was built in the heart of Oranjestad and since 1977 it is the home of the elderly. The present hospital opened in 1977 and was named after Aruba’s first medical doctor Dr. H.E. Oduber. Before the hospital opened its doors, Dr. Oduber treated his patients at his home. (Quinta del Carmen in Bubali) The building still exists and has been restored to its original state by a local architect who still lives there.

Given the history of the island, there is a great deal of Dutch influence in the organization and execution of the Health Care in Aruba. The small-scale nature of the island has been conducive to the central position of the hospital regarding Aruba’s medical care. In 2006 the hospital celebrated its 30-year existence on its present location. [http://www.arubahospital.com/english/over_hoh/geschiedenis.html]

Pre-MD Program

The five year MD program is designed to cater to high school graduates intending to obtain a MD degree. This requires additional 4 semesters to complete the Premedical Program. Students study for an additional 2 years to fulfill the 90 semester hour requirement in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Math (4 semesters). Once these 4 semesters are successfully completed, students move on to complete the Basic Science (pre-clinical) portion of the program which leads into clinical rotations in the U.S.
