KCWY, channel 13, is the NBC affiliate for Casper, Wyoming. The station also serves as the satellite outlet for KSWY channel 7 in Sheridan, KCHY-LP channel 13 in Cheyenne, K14LK channel 14 in Laramie and K30GV channel 30 in Riverton. News programming from KCWY is also broadcast on KJWY in Jackson, Wyoming. All stations except K30GV are owned by Sunbelt Communications Company.

History

KCWY signed on the air in February 2001 as an affiliate of the Pax TV network. On September 1, 2003, KCWY became the new NBC affiliate in the Casper market after NBC severed its affiliation with long time affiliate KTWO. KCWY launched its first newscast ("News 13 First at Five") on September 22, 2003. The signal for KCWY is available via satellite on Galaxy 16 and channel 7802.

In 2008, the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters named KCWY Television Station of the Year. [ [http://www.wyomingbroadcasting.org/WAB%20Awards.htm WAB Awards ] ]

On August 14, 2008, Sunbelt Communications Company and Western Family Television filed an application with the FCC to exchange licenses in Sheridan. Upon closing, Sunbelt will move to low power channel 29, currently KJCW-LP, and Western Family Television will move to the full power channel 7 allocation.

Digital Television Transition

Because they were granted original construction permits after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [http://www.transmitter.com/FCC97115/chanplan.html] , KCWY and KSWY did not receive companion channels for digital television stations. Instead, on or before February 17, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, both KCWY and KSWY will be required to turn off their analog signals and turn on their digital signals (called a "flash-cut").

After the transition, KCWY will operate its digital facilities on channel 12.
