History

After the Portugal's Crown Prince Pedro had proclaimed Brazilian independence from Portugal, on September 7, 1822, some troops stayed loyal to Portugal. To guarantee the independence, this troops must be defeated. Against the troops in Bahia, Dom Pedro I established in 1823 the Emperor’s Battalion with militaries loyal to him.

In 1825, Emperor’s Battalion was sent to Montevideo to fight at Argentina-Brazil War. After Dom Pedro I abdication, Emperor’s Battalion was dismissed as all other troops direct subordinated to him.

On April 7, 1933, President Getulio Vargas established the Guards Battalion to protect the government`s palaces. The decree determined that this battalion was heir to Emperor’s Battalion and would use it`s uniforms at special ceremonies and party days. On April 6, 1960, it was sent to protect the new palaces at Brasilia, chaging it`s name into Presidential Guard Battalion.

The most important officer was the 2nd Liutenant Luís Alves de Lima e Silva. [ [http://www.bgp.eb.mil.br/historico.htm] ]
