Pishin (Pashto: پشین) is a district in the north west of Balochistan province of Pakistan. [http://www.nrb.gov.pk/lg_election/union.asp?district=80&dn=Pishin Tehsils & Unions in the District of Pishin - Government of Pakistan] ] Until 1975 Pishin was a part of the Quetta Pishin district, for administrative reasons Pishin was separated from Quetta and was made a new district on 18th January of that year. Over 99% of the people of the area are Muslims. The population of Pishin District was estimated to be over 400,000 in 2005, the majority of whom are Pashtuns. It consists of a large plain surrounded on three sides by hills, which formerly belonged to Afghanistan but was ceded to the British by the treaty of Gandamak in 1879.

Administration

The district of Pishin is administratively subdivided into three tehsils:

* Barshore
* Karezat
* Pishin

As well as one sub-tehsil

* Hurramzai

Agriculture

Pishin has very good soil for production of good quality apple, cherry, almond, grapes, plum etc. The main source of income for the large number of population is these orchards, despite livestock keeping.

Tribes

Most of the people of Pishin District are from four tribes namely the Tareen, Kakar, Achakzai and Syed. The Tareens are the most numerous and comprise 60% of the district population. The Achakzais were originally based in Killa Abdullah and Afghanistan but have now established themselves in Pishin District.

Sports

Shoaib Khan Panezai, a direct descendent of Bostan, is famous in the district. For the first time in the history of First-Class cricket of Balochistan province scored 884 Runs in 10 matches of Quad-e-Azam trophy 2007 and remained second highest scorer whole over the country. He signed the central contract with Pakistan cricket board and was also selected in 15 player’s squad of the national team against Bangladesh.
