Helen Levitov Sobell

Helen Levitov Sobell (13 March, 1918 - 15 April, 2002) was convicted of espionage, along with her husband, Morton Sobell as atomic spies.

Biography

She was born in Washington, DC and was trained to be a teacher at Wilson Teachers College. During World War II she worked at the National Bureau of Standards as a spectrometer technician. In 1945 she and her first husband, Clarence D. Gurewitz, divorce. She then married Morton Sobell and they stayed married until 1980. She and her husband both worked at the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York. She studied physics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. After moving to New York City in 1947, she was awarded a master's degree at Columbia University in 1950. After being accused of spying, she and her husband and two children fled to Mexico. They were abducted, taken to the United States border and turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After serving her sentence, she taught science at the Elisabeth Irwin High School (she left after her husband was released) and studied system theory and received a Ph.D. in computer education from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1972. cite news |first= |last= |authorlink= |coauthors= |title=Helen L.
