Kirby Abilities

Kirby Abilities

In the Kirby series, Kirby was allowed to swallow enemies and gain their abilities. If Kirby had swallowed two of these at a time, he would gain a random ability. This will list every one of Kirby's abilities from Nightmare in Dreamland, The Amazing Mirror, Squeak Squad, and Kirby Super Star. Note that all these abilities can be lost if Kirby receives damage in any fashion or presses Select (except for the Star Rod). If you lose it, the ability will bounce around in the form of a star. After a couple seconds, it will disappear. Abilities such as Galaxia and Triple Star will stay on the screen unless they are blown out or they fall into a pit.

Normal Kirby

This is Kirby's normal state. He can jump, kick, inhale, float, swim, walk, and run. You can still beat the game with him being normal but this involves spitting back the bosses' henchmen or items back at them.

Beam Kirby

Whenever Kirby swallowed a Waddle Doo, he gained the Beam ability. With the Beam ability, Kirby could shoot a laserbeam similair to Waddle Doo but faster and with his hand. Also, Kirby would don a jester's hat. Waddle Doo appears early in the game and is relatively easy to receive. This appears in all games. In Super Star, Kirby can also spray a funnel of blue dots, a charged beam, and a rapid fire beam.

Laser Kirby

In the mid-levels, you may come across a floating, orange happy face or Laser Bubbles. Kirby can inhale these enemies easily and gain the Laser ability. He wears a device similair to Cyclops from X-Men on his head. It fires a fast and moderately powerful laser. The laser also richochets off of angled hills. This appears in all games except Super Star.

UFO Kirby

On certain levels, a UFO may rush towards you and try to fire a laser at you. If Kirby inhales this enemy, he also becomes a UFO. His regular attack is similar to Waddle Doo. If you hold the B Button, you can charge up the laser and still move around and let go whenever. This appears in all games except Super Star.

Stone Kirby

You can also activate some switches with this. This appears in all games except Squeak Squad. In Super Star, if Kirby is dashing and turns to stone, he rolls at his enemies.

Metal Kirby

This ability replaces Stone in Kirby Squeak Squad. If you swallowed a huge metal enemy, you would turn into Metal Kirby. Though invincible to all but pitfalls and bosses, the drawback is that your speed is cut in half and floating is extremely hard. Should you go into the water, it would be impossible to get out. While in this form you can turn into a ball or after a certain item is acquired, smash down like a lead weight. This appears only in Kirby Squeak Squad.

Wheel Kirby

When you inhale Wheelie, Kirby turns into Wheel Kirby and gains a sports cap along with it. This is the fastest ability and you can run over enemies for as long as you want and are invincible unless you turn. Also, this ability can be stopped by you or a wall. Hopefully, not a fall. This appears in all games.

Flaming Kirby

If a flaming eyeball-like creature appears, you can inhale it to become Flaming Kirby. You can plow into enemies as a fireball. In Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, this was combined with Fire Kirby.

Fire Kirby

When Kirby swallowed a Hothead, he gained this ability. He used it to defend his front with a line of fire. He could use it to ignite fuses to cannons as well. In Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and Super Star, if he started running and immediately pressed B, you would turn to a fireball instead. This also can melt ice in Kirby: Squeak Squad. This appears in all games.

Parasol Kirby

When Kirby swallowed a Waddle Dee or Waddle Doo carrying a parasol, he gained this ability. He could use the parasol to float safely to the ground, or fight directly with enemies. In Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, the B button could be held down to guard your front. This is still usable in water. This appears in all games.

Hammer Kirby

When Kirby swallowed Bonkers, he gained a hammer. This hammer was a powerful weapon used to activate switches and break metal boxes. This weapon was improved in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror. This is still usable in water. This appears in all games.

Sword Kirby

This was a required ability against Meta Knight. When Kirby swallowed a Blade Knigt or Sword Knight, he gained a green ball-capped hat similar to Link's and a sword. This was used in a fight with Meta Knight. Also could be used to cut rope in Kirby: Squeak Squad and was improved in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror. This is still usable in water. This appears in all games.

In Kirby Air Ride, this ability was a combat ability for destroying foes. The ability is automatic as you ride the air machine.

Cutter Kirby

Whenever there was Sir Kibble, there is always a cutter. Kirby can inhale him and gain the Cutter ability. Kirby can throw boomerang like objects and either catch them or jump over them. This appears in all games.

Ice Kirby

Freeze Kirby

When Kirby swallowed a snowman he gained the Freeze ability. He wears a hooded coat similar to his hat in Super Smash Bros. Melee. With this ability he sent a forcefield of ice to protect himself. All who touched it was frozen, waiting to be kicked around. This appears in Nightmare in Dreamland only.

This appeared in Kirby Air Ride also where Kirby would gain his regular snow suit. By holding down the charge button, you could freeze surrounding foes.

Backdrop Kirby

After defeating Bugsy, you can inhale him and gain the Backdrop ability. This allows you to grab an enemy, jump up, and smash them down. This was modified in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror to Fighter Kirby. In Super Star, this is called the Suplex Ability.

Suplex Kirby

In Kirby Super Star, by swalling a Bugsy, or certain other enemies, Kirby becomes Suplex Kirby. This allows you to grab an enemy, and then perform a number of different attacks, including throwing them or jumping and smashing them to the ground.

Fighter Kirby

When a Box Boxer comes around, Kirby can inhale it and gain a red headband. Instead of a regular relaxed stance, Kirby also puts up his fists for show. Hence the name, Kirby can unleash a series of kicks, punches, uppercuts, and can even fire blasts from his hands. He could grab enemies like in Nightmare in Dreamland, but instead jumps up vertically and smashes them down.

Throw Kirby

The only way to obtain this ability in Nightmare in Dreamland, is to defeat Phan Phan, an elephant-like creature and inhale him. As the miniboss's attacks matches the abilities of Throw Kirby, you can suck up enemies and throw them at another enemy. In Kirby Squeak Squad, there was a large enemy you could inhale and grant you this ability. This appears in all games except Super Star.

Rocket Kirby

First appearing in The Amazing Mirror, then transferring to Kirby: Canvas Curse, Kirby could inhale a rocket like creature to gain a little hat and the ability to transform into a rocket. You could control the direction until Kirby explodes into an enemy on contact. This appeared in The Amazing Mirror only, other than Canvas Curse.

Tornado Kirby

When Kirby swallows a Tornado Top, he gains this ability. He uses it to travel around the air at high speeds. When using this, you can hold down the B Button to go higher. During the time Kirby is using this, he damages enemies that touch him and is invincible to everything but pitfalls. This appears in all games except Super Star.

In Air Ride, this ability enhances the spin attack of an air ride machine into a tornado spin. Charging up would result in a large spin.

Ball Kirby

Occasionally, you may come across a bouncy ball creature. Kirby could inhale this enemy and become Ball Kirby. He can switch bewtween ball form and regular. He dons a cap to indicate he has the ability. As you press the jump button, Kirby's bounce becomes faster and stronger. However, should you come across a fall, your risk is high. This appears in Nightmare in Dreamland only.

Spark Kirby / Plasma Kirby

When Kirby Swallows a Plasma Wisp he gains this ability. Much like Freeze Kirby, but electricity surrounds him instead. In Kirby: Squeak Squad, this ability would conduct into metal floors and chains. This appears in all games, but is called Plasma Kirby in Super Star.

Plasma Kirby showed up in Air Ride as well where Kirby could charge up his attack to a giant ball of energy that tracks an opponent.

An ultimate attack that can only be used once. If Kirby swallows a skull bomb before it does suicide bombing, then he becomes Crash Kirby and starts blinking. When Kirby uses this ability, it kills all regular enemies and deals heavy damage to bosses. This appears in Nightmare in Dreamland only and Super Star.

Hyper Kirby

Called Super in Kirby Superstar. Though not necessarily a Kirby ability, it can only be obtained when Kirby consumes a Lollipop, (Hyper Candy) often supplied by Metaknight in the older games and shows up in certain places in the others. When this ability is in effect, Kirby is invincible to all forms of attacks and can greatly damage any enemy he comes into contact with. He will rapidly flash bright colours and gains a lot of speed while the ability is in effect. However, this ability only lasts for approximately 10 seconds. This appears in all games.

Master Kirby

The ultimate weapon in The Amazing Mirror. Kirby is granted Meta Knight's sword, Galaxia. It holds the abilities of a sword but can poke upwards, fire blasts of energy, and if you start running, drill through enemies. This ability is unique to The Amazing Mirror only.

Magic Kirby

This varied between games. In The Amazing Mirror, this would activate a one time roullette. It would turn enemies into food, destroy all enemies on the screen, gain an extra life, and various others. In Squeak Squad, this would pop magic tricks from Kirby's hat as attacks. This does not appear in Nightmare in Dreamland or Super Star.

Needle Kirby

If Kirby inhales a spikey enemy, he gains a helmet of spikes. If you press and hold B this would surround Kirby in pointy, sharp spikes. Though immobile, Kirby is invincible to all but bosses. This only appears in "Nightmare in Dreamland" and "Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards".

Ghost Kirby

Probably the most unique ability to Squeak Squad. If all the ghost medal pieces were obtained, Kirby could defeat a miniboss that looked like a ghost and turn into one himself. Though Kirby can still take damage, he can also posess an enemy. As long as you have control of an enemy, Kirby can not get hurt until the posessed gets destroyed. Kirby could go through anything except walls with this ability. Also, the enemy can jump infinitely as such Kirby can continue to float. This is unique to Squeak Squad only.

Bomb Kirby

By swallowing a Bomb Poppy Bros., Kirby gets a Poppy Bros. hat and the ability to create bombs and throw them at enemies. If Kirby holds it for too long it will detonate and damage Kirby. You can choose the angle Kirby throws it. In Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad, this ability was acquired by inhaling an onion-like creature. In Squeak Squad, you could form a different kind of bomb by combining abilities. This appears in The Amazing Mirror, Squeak Squad, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, and Super Star.

Cook Kirby

By swallowing the Cook miniboss, Kirby gets the special, one time use Cook ability and a chef's hat. Ninja Kirby

In Kirby Squeak Squad, occasionally there was a ninja hopping around or hiding behind a curtain. This also made an appearance in Kirby Air Ride where Kirby would become faster unless riding Hydra or Dragoon where he would actually go slower.

Yo-Yo Kirby

Swallowing a yo-yo enemy gives Kirby a nifty ball cap and a yo yo, which can be used to attack enemies. This appears in Super Star and Super Star Ultra.

Ability Museums

If you walk into an ability museum you will see enemies that hold abilities (Except Hammer, Mike, UFO, Backdrop, and Throw; these are only held by minibosses). These enemies are infinite as you can go out and back into the museum. They will not attack you or hurt you on contact. Each museum is slightly different from each level. Currently , Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, and have these. However Nightmare in Dreamland is the only one where you must inhale the enemy. In Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, you could enter a certain mirror or if you unlocked it, the mirror museum, and simply you make contact with an icon that looks like an enemy. Touch one and you instantly gain the ability.Kirby Squeak Squad has the most straightforward museum where if you are successful in collecting all the keys for each level, you unlock the bubble museum where instead, the abilities are in bubbles (except Triple Star).
