An American
mobster wants to open a legtimateSwiss bank , and hires a British financier Doc Fletcher (Caine) and an ItalianPrince (Jourdan) and gives them $3m to find a sutiable bank. They also have to take his wayward son Alberto under his arm. Unfortunately Fletcher leaves the purchase of a bank in the hands of the Prince, who wastes their money on a small shabby establishment above a restaurant, realising he can not go back to America and admit failure Fletcher decides they have to make do as best they can.The Prince has ideas, however, of how they can use the bank to make a killing both for themselves and their employers. They fly out to
Iran , where Fletcher meets distant relations of the Prince who have discovered a largesilver mine containing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of untappedsilver . The owners of the mine wish to keep it a a secret, for fear that the government will try and nationalise the valuable property. Fletcher agrees to use the bank to funnel the silver onto the markets, quickly making it one of the wealthiest banks inSwitzerland .However, it soon attracts the interest of a major American bank and the richest man in the world, Sir Charles Cook. Cook arranges for the Americans to buy the Swiss Bank, so that they can gain control of the mine. Fletcher begins to try and piece together a deal that can save the bank.
