orority History

The Foundation of KAL

During her second year of attendance at Clark Atlanta University, K.E. Banks was on a path of self-discovery. Over the course of that year, she embraced her personal orientation as a lesbian woman, and sought to assist the LGBT community in fighting prejudice and intolerance.

Recognizing that such a goal could not be reached alone, Miss Banks researched a variety of organizations created for lesbian women. Though many focused on the philanthropic aspects of the community, few combined these aspirations with the idea of a lifelong Sisterly bond that inspired Members to continue their service to the organization and community throughout.

On the evening of October 19th, 2003, K.E. Banks drafted the basis of Kappa Alpha Lambda Sorority.

Since its establishment, Kappa has established its home chapter in Atlanta, GA, with colonies in New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, and Houston, TX.

Membership

Since its beginnings, the Sorority has held its membership as a private, invitation-only process. Prospective members contact the nearest local colony or chapter and express their interest in receiving an invitation. The local members then interact with the prospective member, learning her interests, personality, and commitment to the philanthropic programs of the Sorority.

If the prospective member is deemed a good candidate for Membership, she is approved by the members and given an invitation. After this, the membership education process begins.

Organization

Kappa Alpha Lambda is structured into nine provinces, each of which serves a specific geographic area.
