Background

Writer, artist and anthropologist Rae Bridgman was born in Toronto. She is the mother of six children, and has made Winnipeg, Manitoba her home. Bridgman received her Bachelor of Arts degree (Classics) and her Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto, and her Master's (Interdisciplinary Studies) and PhD (Anthropology) from York University. She holds the position of Professor in the Department of City Planning at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Architecture. She is a founding member of BridgmanCollaborative Architecture, a Winnipeg Architecture firm. Her writing spans children's fantasy novels and academic books.

Bridgman illustrates her fantasy novels with distinctive India ink drawings that are found at the start of each chapter. She also incorporates Latin into her children's books to activate interest in the ancient living language. Latin is magical in the novels and is used to unlock the secret meaning of words. The MiddleGate novels are written for readers 8 - 108 years old.
