History

Second Wind was founded in 1980 when Walter Sass and Kenneth Cohn—engineers who have been friends since grade school—decided the emerging field of wind energy would provide an opportunity for them to leverage their engineering skills to benefit the environment. They recognized that for wind energy to take off, the industry needed more than wind turbines. Wind developers also needed software and hardware that would help them to measure wind accurately at prospective sites, and monitor successful turbine performance at established wind farms. The company’s first headquarters was the spare bedroom in Sass’s home.

Second Wind has maintained a presence in wind resource assessment since introducing the first data logger designed specifically for wind energy prospecting in 1981. In 1985, the company tackled wind farm monitoring and introduced its Advanced Distributed Monitoring System (ADMS) now used by leading operators to manage thousands of turbines worldwide. As wind farms scaled up, the challenge of managing operations with various conventional SCADA systems drove the development of Second Wind’s Enterprise Management System (EMS) to deliver integrated turbine SCADA, on-site meteorological data, wind forecasting, and market price inputs. In 1997, the company won its first contract to provide Florida Power & Light with its programmable Phaser® digital power transducer, marking its successful diversification from wind power generation monitoring to substation automation. In 2004, Second Wind began development of its Model C3 anemometer to offer a second source for, and improve on, the industry’s most popular 3-cup anemometer design. The company also launched the SkyServeSM Satellite Wind Data Service in 2007; it uses Globalstar's satellite network to provide affordable and reliable remote data communication for its Triton™ and Nomad® 2 customers.
