Simeon Draper

Simeon Draper (born in 1804"Simeon Draper", Edited Appletons Encyclopedia, 2001] , died November 1866) was Collector of the Port of New York"Death of Simeon Draper", New York Times, November 7, 1866, pg. 4.] from September 1864 "-" August 1865. ["The New Collector Talks", New York Times, July 31, 1891, pg. 8.] He was a native of West Springfield, Massachusetts. Draper was a friend of Daniel Webster and an ardent supporter of the Whig Party (United States). He was a brother of William B. Draper. ["Obituary", New York Times, April 18, 1885, pg. 2.]

Career

He was a merchant's clerk in Boston, Massachusetts before coming to New York City. Soon after starting his business career there, he married a daughter of John Haggerty. He resided in New York for more than forty years. In the 1840s Draper was appointed one of a board of Almshouse Governors. He became noteworthy in commercial, political, and social circles.
