At the railway station of Riccarton Junction, on the North British Railway's (NBR)'s Border Union Railway (also known as the NBR's "Waverley Route"), the Border Counties Railway branched off towards Hexham railway station. The Waverley Route closure in 1969 entailed the closure of Riccarton Junction.

Riccarton Junction, in the county of Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders, was a railway village and station with up to 118 residents, school, post office and grocery store in its heydays. Remarkably there was no road access until a forest track was built in 1963, all access until then being by rail. The branch line from Riccarton Junction to Kielder and Hexham was closed 15 October 1956. The Waverley Route was closed on 6 January 1969. Reuse

At Riccarton Junction and at Whitrope Siding near Whitrope Tunnel the Waverley Route Heritage Association has recently relaid track panels with a view of starting heritage railway activity.
