Chavdar (Bulgarian: Чавдар, pronounced [tʃəvˈdar]) is a village in western Bulgaria, part of Sofia Province. It is the administrative centre of Chavdar municipality, which lies in the easternmost part of Sofia Province. Chavdar is situated in the ZlatitsaPirdop Valley, 80 kilometres east of the capital Sofia, at the foot of the western Balkan Mountains and close to Sredna Gora. The village is the only place in the eponymous municipality, which has an area of 70 square kilometres. Until 1899, Chavdar was named Kolanlare, then it was renamed to Radoslavovo (after Vasil Radoslavov), and it acquired its present name on 5 January 1946 after the partisan brigade that was active in the region.
