The Grassfields languages are a sub-branch of Benue-Congo and a sister group to the Bantu languages. Better-known Grassfields peoples include the Bamun and Bamileke.

The Grassfields languages are sometimes classified on two levels, "Wide Grassfields," which includes all the languages, and "Narrow Grassfields," which excludes Menchum and the Momo languages. However, the memberships of the various groups are still somewhat fluid.
