Dirk Brouwer (born 1899 in
Alkmaar - executed 1941 atOverveen ) was a Dutcharchitect . His father was aconcierge at a local technical school.After three years of studies Dirk Brouwer learned from various architects and attented a course for Higher Architectural Education in
Amsterdam . His buildings were designed according to theAmsterdam School and he cooperated withWillem Marinus Dudok , a notable assertor ofModernism , thus Brouwer's style was influenced. In 1938 he designed the backside and possibly also thedome light of theBijenkorf department store in Amsterdam, which was since used by HEMA, he also built the HEMA store inHeerlen .In
World War II he joined the resistance and the editors of the illegal magazineVrij Nederland . He was therefore executed by German troops in the dunes near Overveen in 1941.
