Gerald Burton Allen

Gerald Burton Allen (1885 - 1956) was the second Bishop of Sherborne ["The Times" (1936)] and after a short period as Assistant to the Bishop of Oxford the inaugural Bishop of Dorchester.
Born into a clerical family [His father was "The Rev T.K Allen", sometime Vicar of Weyhill (Who was Who, 1991)] , he was educated at Cheltenham College [In retirement he was to be President of the College (Who was Who, 1991)] and Wadham College, Oxford and ordained in 1908. Appointed Chaplain at Wadham in 1910 he was appointed a Fellow and Lecturer at Pembroke College, Oxford ["The Times" (1910)] , a period interrupted by wartime service as a Chaplain to the newly formed RAF. When peace returned he was appointed Principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford in 1920 ["The Times (1951)] . On his retirement as Principal, he was elevated to the Episcopate in 1928, appointed Archdeacon of Oxford in 1936 and translated to Dorchester three years later. A man with the widest sympathies and the most excellent personal relations ["The Times" (1956)] , he resigned in 1952 and died in retirement at Cheltenham four years later.
