Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy

Ramzy Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy (born February 4, 1954) is currently the Assistant Minister of Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs and International Cooperation. He is also Egypt’s Commissioner to Developing 8 Countries (D-8).

Biography

Prior to this assignment, Ramzy served as the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Austria and was concurrently Ambassador (Non-Resident) to the Slovak Republic (2005-2007). He was Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Organizations as well as to the OSCE and served as Egypt’s Governor to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Ramzy officiated as Deputy Assistant Minister for International Political Affairs and Disarmament (2000-2003). He has also served in the capacity of: Ambassador to Brazil (1997-2000); Non-resident Ambassador to Suriname (1998-2000); Non-resident Ambassador to Guyana (1999-2000); Minister, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Egypt in Washington DC, (1993-97); Director for United Nations Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991-93); Counsellor, Cabinet of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (1990-91); Counsellor, Embassy of Egypt in Moscow (1986-90); First Secretary, Department of International Organisations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1984-86); Seconded to the United Nations as Political Officer at the Department for Political and Security Council Affairs (1982-83); Second Secretary, Permanent Mission of Egypt to the United Nations in New York (1978-1982); Third Secretary, Cabinet of Minister of Foreign Affairs (1976-1978).

Ramzy has served as Head of Egyptian delegations to the General Conferences of IAEA and UNIDO, as well as the Preparatory Committee of CTBTO, United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs, Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the OSCE. He has also been a member of Egyptian delegations to numerous international and regional conferences and meetings including the UN General Assembly, Summits and Ministerial Meetings of the Arab League, the African Union (AU), the Islamic Conference (OIC) and OPEC.

Ramzy was also a Junior Fellow at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (1977-78), and has lectured on Egypt, the Middle East, the United Nations, International Security and Disarmament.

Among other honours, Ramzy has received the Order of Merit, Fifth Class from Egypt and the GRA-CRUZ da Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul, from Brazil. Born on 4 February 1954, Ramzy received his BA in Economics (High Honors) from the American University in Cairo (1974). He then completed his M.Sc in Economics at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom (1975), and returned to Egypt to join the Institute of Diplomatic Studies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977.

He is married and has two daughters.
