Symphony No. 27 (Haydn)

Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 27 in G major (Hoboken I/27) was most likely written in 1760, but it could have been written in 1761. [Antony Hodgson, "The Music of Joseph Haydn: The Symphonies". London: The Tantivy Press (1976): 202. The chart places "27" in the year 1760, with an arrowhead going a little bit into 1761.]

The work is scored for 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 horns, and strings with continuo. [H. C. Robbins Landon, "The Symphonies of Joseph Haydn". London: Universal Edition & Rockliff (1955): 658. "2 ob., 2 cor., str. [ fag., cemb. ] . The horns are missing in a number of sources; nevertheless, they are probably authentic."]

The work is in three movements:

On the Col Legno label, the 20th Century Ensemble pair this 18th Century symphony with 20th Century composer Franz Koglmann's jazz-inflected "Nocturnal Walks", a piece in eight movement piece for speaker and orchestra that borrows melodies from Haydn's symphony (the Haydn is conducted by Gustav Kuhn while Peter Burwiki conducts the Koglmann). More typically, Bela Drahos and the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia pair Haydn's No. 27 with No.s 28 and 31 on Naxos Records.
