Ayub Medical College (AMC) is one of the medical schools affiliated to Khyber Medical University. [http://www.kmu.edu.pk] It is a prestigious Pakistani Medical School located in northern city of Abbottabad in NWFP province. As of January 2008, AMC is home to approximately 1250 students in the MBBS program. History

AMC first opening its doors to students in 1979 and was named after former President of Pakistan, Ayub Khan. In May 1979 the first academic year started, with the enrollment of 100 students at the Education Extension Centre in Abbottabad. AMC was moved from Abbottabad towards the outer city limits in 1990 along the Karakoram Highway. Today it hosts one of the best campuses in Pakistan and is situated at an altitude of 1,225 m, (4002 ft). It is believed to be the highest situated medical school in Pakistan. Campus

At present the AMC campus consists of a medical school building, a teaching hospital, a nursing school and a paramedical institute. The campus hosts supporting amenities for all students and staff. The medical school building has 4 air-conditioned, spacious lecture halls with sophisticated audiovisual teaching aids, well-equipped laboratories, museums and a centrally air-conditioned library. A self-learning Resource Centre with access to the Digital Library of the Higher Education Commission is available along with access to high-speed broadband internet access. Recognition

AMC is fully recognized by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), General Medical Council of the United Kingdom and Ireland, the World Health Organization (WHO) and many reputed medical councils of the world. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan has recognized many of its departments for post-graduate training such as Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Britain has granted recognition to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AMC for the clinical training of the MRCOG candidates. Student life

Hostels

There are four Boys' Hostels, and a Girls' Hostel located at the Campus. Located adjacent to the hostels is accommodation for medical officers, house officers, paramedics and nurses. Full-time resident wardens and provosts are employed and strict security is provided to all hostels round the clock. Another Boys' Hostel consisting of 100 rooms is planned. Ayub Medical College provides ample sports and other co-curricular activities to the students.The students arrange Free Medical Camps, Blood Donation Camps, Picnics, Hiking, and other out-door activities.Qirat, Hamd, Naat Competition and Mushaaira, Debates and Painting exhibition are regular activities carried out by the students.

College students are consistently maintaining the student website, where information such as result and entry tests are usually fed from the official website of the college. Alumni

More than 4,800 doctors have graduated from AMC, some of whom are holding high level positions in Pakistan as well as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and the United States. It is claimed that ~70% of the Pakistani doctors in Ireland are graduates of AMC.

The Pakistan Journal of Physiology (Pak J Physiol, PJP, ISSN 1819-270X, IP-034) publishes original research papers in all areas of Human & Animal Physiology. It is published biannually. The PJP is recognised by Pakistan Medical & Dental Council, Indexed by EMRO Index Medicus, Index Copernicus, Pakmedinet and other indexation services.
