The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1936 was the 50th edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran from May to September of that year, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on 6 September. The match was contested by Limerick and Kilkenny, with Limerick taking the title by 5-6 to 1-5. It was Limerick’s first defeat of Kilkenny in almost forty years.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* The winners of the Leinster Championship advanced directly to the All-Ireland final.
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to a lone All-Ireland semi-final.
* Galway, a team who faced no competition in the Connacht Championship, entered the championship at the All-Ireland semi-final stage where they played the Munster champions.
* There were no representatives from the Ulster Championship in the All-Ireland series.

Overview

Sunday 6 September was the date of the 1936 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Limerick and Kilkenny. It was their first meeting in the championship since the 1935 decider when Kilkenny were the winners. Limerick last won the All-Ireland title in 1934 when they defeated Dublin after a replay. Kilkenny were going for a hat-trick of wins over Limerick in All-Ireland finals in the 1930s while Limerick were hoping to defeat Kilkenny in the championship decider for the first time in nearly forty years.

Match report

At 3:15pm the former Cork hurler and match referee Jim O'Regan got the game underway in earnest. After a highly-entertaining thirty minutes of hurling Limerick had a slim 2-3 to 1-4 lead. Limerick’s goals came in the 4th and 22nd minutes courtesy of Jackie Power who was having a great debut season. At the interval many spectators expected the game to turn into a titanic struggle in the second-half, however, Kilkenny collapsed as the Limerick goal-scorers ran riot. Kilkenny only added one point to their tally in the second thirty minutes while Limerick had three more goals from Gerry McMahon, Dave Clohessy and a great score from team captain Mick Mackey after a fantastic solo run. Limerick had avenged the defeats of 1933 and 1935 and went on to win the game by 5-6 to 1-5.
