WNBW will be the NBC-affiliated television station in Gainesville, Florida. The station will broadcast a high definition digital signal on VHF channel 9. It will sign on without an analog signal although there is a construction permit for a companion analog station on UHF channel 29. However, that signal will not operate due to the upcoming analog shutdown on February 17, 2009. cite news|url=http://www.gainesville.com/article/20080916/NEWS/809170287/1002&title=Local_NBC_affiliate_set_to_join_airwaves|title=Local NBC affiliate set to join airwaves|last=Clark|first=Anthony|date=2008-09-16|work=The Gainesville Sun|accessdate=2008-09-17]

It is anticipated that WNBW will be offered on Cox and Communicomm cable systems within the Gainesville area. Its transmitter will be located southeast of Newberry. The station will be owned by MPS Media but operated by New Age Media under a joint sales agreement (JSA). That will make it a sister station to CBS affiliate WGFL and MyNetworkTV affiliate WMYG-LP. WNBW will share studios with those two stations on Northwest 80th Boulevard in Gainesville along I-75.

History

In June of 2008, WGFL announced that it would be launching a new digital-only television station on September 8. Originally known since 1996 by its construction permit number, 960920WR, the station received the WNBW calls on August 18. WNBW's signal was activated for testing on September 4. WNBW has been announced as becoming the NBC affiliate for Gainesville (hence the meaning of the call letters). The new station will hold rights to enforce black outs on out-of-market stations carrying NBC and syndicated programming, including WESH, the NBC affiliate for Orlando, which also serves Gainesville as the de facto NBC affiliate for that market.
