The Palace Theatre (also known as The Palace or formaly called The Metro), is an entertainment venue located in Melbourne, Australia. Established in 1860, it is one of the premier entertainment venues located in the heart of Melbourne’s business & tourism district.

The Palace has hosted a number of International and Australian touring bands, among them American rock band, Nirvana, Snow Patrol, The Prodigy, Silverchair, Xzibit, Cog and many more.

History

The venue was established in 1860, and after being rebuilt in 1912, was known as the "National Amphitheatre". Following many name changes during its 147 year history, the venue was also known as the Palace Theatre between 1916 and 1934. Since the 1980’s, "The Metro" (former name) was predominantly a night club which also held live events. With a capacity of up to 1000, it is often used by newly formed bands and established international artists. Its small size is not only a more intimate experience with the audience, but is cheaper to rent when compared to the fees involved with renting a whole stadium.

The new owners have undertaken major renovations to restore many of the theatre’s origial features. This includes the removal of the silver cladding at the front of the building, restoration of art deco features. The current renovations will enhance the live aspects with the removal of the glass wall on level 1, the relocation of the central bar on the ground floor to the side of the building, raised floor level at the rear of ground floor, removal of internal lighting poles which has vastly improved sightlines.

The club is located close to Parliament Station, at 20-30 Bourke Street, Melbourne, Australia.
