Open Heart Program

Gwinnett County is the most populated county in the nation without open heart surgery. To address this critical lack of care, Gwinnett Medical Center launched a campaign last October to bring open heart services to the county. The lack of an open heart program, coupled with the historically congested roadways between Gwinnett and Atlanta, are cause for serious concern for all residents of Gwinnett. GMC saw a need for the more than one million Georgians in its service area and took action. Its aggressive campaign came to an end on June 5 of this year, when the hospital received the required Certificate of Need from the Georgia Department of Community Health. The open heart surgery program could begin operating as early as 2010, pending appeals from several Atlanta-based hospitals. [http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/printedition/2008/04/30/heart.html]

The open heart program would not be possible without the incredible show of support that the people of the Gwinnett community have provided for GMC. The community rallied around the hospital and let its voice be heard, writing more than 1,000 letters in support of open heart services at GMC. One family that wrote such a letter was so committed to GMC’s plan for open heart services that they became the hospital’s first million dollar donors. Another voice of the community was heard when endorsing editorials were written by the Gwinnett Daily Post and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In addition, local government officials lent their backing. GMC received supportive proclamations from the Gwinnett County Commissioners, the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, Gwinnett County Public Schools, Partnership Gwinnett, the City of Lawrenceville, the City of Duluth, the City of Suwannee, the City of Lilburn and 15 Georgia House Representatives. The county commissioners went so far as to offer $5 million for capital expansion for each of the next five years--a total of $25 million. [http://www.openheartgwinnett.org/]
