Biennio rosso

The biennio rosso (English: "two red years") were two years, 1919 and 1920, of political agitation by Italian workers. In Turin, workers councils were formed and many factory occupations took place. The "two red years" of 1919 and 1920 were followed by the "two black years", or "biennio nero", of 1921 and 1922, with the March on Rome by Benito Mussolini and his fascist supporters taking place in 1922.

Biennio Rosso took place in the two years following the first world war. It saw mobilitations taking place (primarily in the north), commotions, labour manifestations as well as self-management through land and factories occupations. The agitations also extended to the rural zones of the Po plain and were accompanied by strikes, manifestations and violent actions.
