Symphony No. 14 (Haydn)

Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 14 in A major, [Hoboken-Verzeichnis|Hoboken} I/14, may have been written between 1761 and 1763. [H. C. Robbins Landon, "The Symphonies of Joseph Haydn". London: Universal Edition & Rockliff (1955): 636]

Symphony No. 14 is scored for 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 horns, strings and continuo, with an important cello solo in the slow movement. [Landon (1955): 636. "2 ob., 2 cor., str., [ fag., cemb. ] . Vcl. solo in Andante."] As was becoming more common for Haydn, this symphony has four movements:

* I. Allegro molto, 3/4
* II. Andante in D major, 2/4
* III. Menuetto e Trio: Allegretto, with the Trio in A minor, both 3/4
* IV. Allegro, 6/8

The Andante was originally the finale of an early divertimento "Der Geburtstag" (en. "Birthday") (Hob. II/11).HC Robbins Landon, Haydn: Chronicle and Works, 5 vols, (Bloomington and London: Indiana University Press, 1976-) v. 1, Haydn: the Early Years, 1732-1765]

The trio of the Minuet features an oboe solo accompanied by violins and cello.

The finale is highly contrapuntal.

Besides the complete sets of all the symphonies by Adam Fischer with the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra and Antal Doráti with the Philharmonia Hungarica, Symphony No. 14 is also available on a disc with No.s 15 - 17 with Kevin Mallon conducting the Toronto Chamber Orchestra.
