William Gordon Wheeler

The Rt Rev. (William) "Gordon Wheeler " was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Leeds from 1966 until 1985 [ The Times Saturday, Aug 24, 1985; pg. 10; Issue 62225; col E "Bishop Wheeler to retire"] .Born on 5 May 1910 and educated at Manchester Grammar School and University College, Oxford [ “Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 9780199540877 ] he was ordained an Anglican Priest in 1934 and began his ecclesiastical career with curacies at "St Bartholomew's, Brighton" and "St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield" before being received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1936. Again ordained priest in 1940 he was firstly an Assistant Curate at "St Edmund's, Lower Edmonton", then a Chaplain at (and later the Administrator of Administrator of) Westminster Cathedral; and finally, before his elevation to the Episcopate, Coadjutor Bishop] of Middlesbrough. A noted author [Amongst others he wrote “Homage to Newman”, 1945 and “ More Truth and Love”, 1994 British Library catalogue accessed 28 August 2008 22:26] , he died on 20 February 1998.
