Wakatake class destroyer

Wakatake class destroyer

Naming History

The IJN originally provided numerical designations to every ship, as a result of the large number of warship the IJN expected to build through the Eight-eight fleet plan. However, the bland numerical designation brought a bad reputation from the officers and crews. The IJN abolished the numerical designation of all destroyers on August 1928, reverting to naming conventions.
