Background

MC Lyte was only 17 when she made the song. The song contains a sample of "The Man-Machine" by Kraftwerk. The song spent 18 weeks on the Billboard Rap charts, peaking at the #1 spot.[1]

In 2008, it was ranked number 54 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. She performed this song at the 2008 BET Hip Hop Awards.

The single was sampled in 7L & Esoteric's second EP release, Dangerous Connection, on a track called "Word Association". The song was also featured on the soundtrack of the video game Grand Theft Auto IV on the fictional in-game station "The Classics 104.1".

Music video

The video for cha cha cha is mostly seen in black and white, however some parts of it is seen in color. Lyte is seen in the video in various locations commenting on herself calling her the " The dopest female that you heard thus far".Then in her second verse she and her posse question a male pedestrian in a dark room shining a light in his face introducing herself as the "Capital L-Y-T-E". She then explains that she has been watching him the last few days and she says that it is plain to see that he is a wannabe. One man from Lyte's posse slaps him in the back of the head then Lyte punches him in the back of the shoulder before leaving. She then closes the song with her third and final verse and the two Porsches seen on the cover of the album suddenly drive away.
