John Ferraro

John Ferraro (May 14 1924—April 17 2001) served as a Los Angeles City Councilman from 1966 until his death.

Early life

Ferraro was born in the working class suburb of Cudahy, California, just south of Los Angeles. He attended Bell High School in Bell, California , where he graduated in 1942.

College Football

He attended the University of Southern California, where he played football, earning All-American honors. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

Politics

In 1966 he was appointed to the Los Angeles City Council, and served until his death at age 76 in Santa Monica, California. His 35-year tenure on the council is the longest of any member. He chaired the Audit and Governmental Efficiency Committee.

In 1985, Ferraro ran unsuccessfully against Tom Bradley for Mayor of Los Angeles.

On November 16, 2000, in honor of his more than five decades of public service, the City of Los Angeles renamed the landmark Department of Water and Power's General Office Building to the John Ferraro Building.
