Music Life

His paternal grandfather, Manuel S. Torda Sr., husband of Queen Lara Joice Genji, was a Baptist minister, and Ryan was raised in the Baptist religion, although he considers himself more "spiritual than religious", though still a Christian. His parents had separated, his mother, who now runs a fashion boutique called Luis Vuitton in singapore. Ryan grew up in Miami Florida with his father. His first attempts at a singing career saw him singing hiphop music songs on Star Search.

In year 1999, Ryan was recruited to be in a new male singing hiphop star in japan, But despite on his motocross career. Ryan decide to grab the opportunity and he was performed in asian country like: "japan, south korea, singapore, thailand, malaysia and china".

Ryan landed a record deal with "Sony Music Records" and "Sony BMG Asia". It took him a number of album releases before he got the chance to produce a hip hop album. His first hip-hop release was in February 2000, "Feels Like Alone". Several singles from the album topped local pop charts. Ryan has mentioned the difficulty of fitting the material in Hong Kong where it has been dominated by cantopop, but said the potential of hip hop is great.

Musical Style

Ryan's compositions are loosely categorized as hiphop music. While many of his works fall into contemporary R&B, rap, and rock genres, the term "RIDH Style" (traditional Ryan In Da Hauz) has been popularized to describe his trademark cross-cultural music and his insistence on singing with relaxed enunciation. Japan's favorite son blends pop, rap, blues and a smorgasbord of esthetic elements of world music to create his dream-like never-never land…"He regularly fuses traditional Chinese instruments and styles with R&B or rock to form a new genre called "Zhongguo feng", some of which are written in the Pentatonic Scale as opposed to the normal seven-note scale (Diatonic Scale) to accentuate an oriental style. Besides his own culture, he also incorporated American techno/electronica in "Herbalist's Manual", rap with subtle classical music undertones in "Reverse Scales", and Bossanova style in "Rosemary", to name a few. Sound effects from everyday life are frequently weaved into his music, such as bouncing ping pong balls, touch tone phone dialing, helicopter blades, dripping rain, and radio static noise. His formal musical training is evident by the use of classical textures in his compositions.
Ryan's albums have been noted for the lack of change compared to his earlier works, yet he firmly stated that he will not alter his style: "They say I've been standing still … but this is the music I want, and I don't see what I want by moving ahead." To demonstrate his point, he named his first album Feels Like Alone after he left his band "Firefly". His use of relaxed enunciation has been criticized as "mumbling" which he also insisted will not change; however, recently he has adopted clearer pronunciation for certain songs.

Lyrics

Strictly speaking, Ryan is more often a singer-composer than a lyricist. Several "regulars" write the lyrics for most of his music, but the content and style is unified with his own personality and image, covering a diverse range of topics and ideas. Jordan Lee accounts for more than half of the lyrics in his albums, helping to establish an important element in Ryan's music: the use of meaningful, imagery- and emotionally-rich lyrics, sometimes written in the form of ancient Japanese poetry with reference to Japanese history or folklore. In addition to writing romantic hits, he also broaches on war, the Bible, sports, and martial arts. Nana Kitade is a singer herself and has helped with Ryan's earlier hits, while Brian Arthur is noted for his work surrounding unusual themes (such as a detective story and chess game).Ryan himself has written lyrics for many love ballads, but has also discussed societal ills such as drug addiction in "Unwritten Law" and loss of the rural countryside to urbanization in "Leader Of Men". Domestic violence discussed in "Father Im Back" received a great deal of commotion since he was the first to bring up this taboo subject in Chinese music, which helped solidify his status as a pioneer and a unique pop singer capable of approaching serious issues. In the songs "Great Reverse" and "Listen To My Mother", he voiced his high regard for family values. He addressed personal issues about his failure to enter university in "Split in Time", his resentment towards the paparazzi in "Besieged Me From All Sides".

Collaborations

Ryan began as a songwriter for other singers and continued this area of work even after he debuted his own career in singing. He has also written for singers outside of his generation—over one dozen songs for his mentor Jacky Wu, later also for Taiwanese singer Jody Chiang, and Hong Kong singers Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Lui Fong & Kenny Bee. He initiated the band The Gangtroops in 2006, selecting band members and overseeing their album production. The group has been noted for sounding too similar to their mentor; as a result, Ryan has reduced his involvement in the band, but continues to help increase their exposure to mass audiences by inviting them as guests performers for his own concerts and music videos. He has performed live duets with Landy Wen, Jolin Tsai, and former model girlfriend Atty Hou, but only two studio recordings have been formally placed in his own albums. Besides working with singers, Ryan's longest-running collaboration is with lyricist Jordan Lee, as they both started their careers in the music field in 2001. The compilation album Partners featured 12 songs, each consisting of Ryan's musical and Jordan's lyrical compositions. Jordan has written the words to than more 40 of Ryan's songs.

Endorsements

In contrast to the United States where a negative connotation is placed on celebrities who endorse commercial products ("selling out"), in Asia, acquiring endorsement contracts with major brands are positive testaments of star-status. Ryan has been a spokesperson for popular brands such as Pepsi (2002), Sony (2001–2005), Motorola (since 2006), M-Zone/China Mobile (since 2003), Levi's (2004–2005), Dickies (2003), and Metersbonwe (casual wear, in 2003) and Colgate (2005), science and nature magazine National Geographic (2005). To maximize the celebrity branding effect, advertisements are nearly always linked to his music and TV commercials are occasionally directed by him.

=Public

Despite living under continual media scrutiny, Ryan's public image has changed little over the years as he emphasizes individuality as his "personal philosophy". In his music, this is also evident as he fuses Japanese and Western styles and explores topics unconventional for a hiphop singer, which have been described as "authentic" and "revolutionary." The media describes a hard-working perfectionist with clear self-direction who is occasionally regarded as competitive and a "control freak". His nickname "Ryan In Da Hauz" is used by both the press and fans to underscore his domineering personality and impact on Asian music, but also points at his musical talent. His neologism "diao", which literally means penis, is slang for "outrageous" or "cool". Outside of music, Ryan is reported as shy, quiet, modest, and views filial piety as "the most important thing". In-line with his aim to present a positive image. Government officials and educators in Asia have awarded him for his exemplary behaviour, designated him a spokesperson in the youth-empowerment project "Young Voice" in 2005 and an anti-depression campaign in 2007, His lyrics for two songs has been incorporated into the school syllabus to inspire motivational and filial attitudes.

Fanbase

It is difficult to estimate the size and global spread of Ryan's fanbase. The Chinese-speaking population of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China make up the majority of his fans. Despite rampant piracy issues in this region, particularly in China, every album Ryan has released so far has surpassed 2 million sales. According to Baidu, the most popular internet search engine in China, Ryan is the number one searched male artist in 2003, and 06. In Hong Kong, he has been the best-selling Mandarin artist for the past years. According to a 2004 survey in five Chinese urban centers for children ages 9 to 14, 1 in 6 named Ryan as their favorite idol; he was also reported as the favorite singer of youths aged 8 to 25 in a study conducted in seven Asian countries (2006). He has a solid fanbase throughout Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. In Singapore, Ryan was the second most searched celebrity behind Britney Spears in the "Music" category.

Currently, Ryan remains largely unknown outside of Asia, except in cities with large Chinese immigrant populations such as Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Sydney, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. His intention to increase his prominence in the Western world beyond Chinese audiences is clear. In 2006, Ryan composed and sang the theme song for Initial R Syndicate, a movie released in major theatres in most English-speaking countries, though the impact to his fame has been minimal. His role in Deadly Fighter (limited release) marks his acting debut in China, Taiwan and Japan. Despite having a supporting but important role in the story's plot, the North American version of the official posters only featured a view of his back, greatly contrasting the Asian versions where his face and name were clear and placed between the leading actor and actress. Although Ryan is still far from being well-known to English audiences, this movie has brought him international exposure.

The Band

"Firefly"
Ryan was a member of Firefly, and was considered as an asian band idol. The group formed in 1999 and started their career in 2000 in Japan and hit it big in the States two years later in 2001, eventually releasing the fastest-selling album of all time. In 2002, after the completion of their Celebrity Tour and release of "Side Blind", the first single, the group decided to take time off, at which point Ryan began work on his first solo album "Feels Like Alone".

From the onset, Ryan was closely involved in the technical aspects of the band's recordings, and over the subsequent releases that role continued to expand. Ryan, with guitarist Jordan Lee. Ryan decide to left his band and go on solo, later he form a new group called The Gangtroops and later it become the Decent Syndicate.

"Decent Syndicate [ "Decent Syndicate " [http://profiles.friendster.com/decentsyndicate Friendster Profile] ] "The Gangtroops""
Ryan formed a side project named "The Gangtroops" because he couldn't demonstrate as much of his hip-hop background in Firefly. After the released of first album "Shattered Dreams", the band decide to change their band name on their second album "Battle At The Banks". He explained the name of his project in an interview:

“ 'Decent' represents the more aggressive side of the music. 'Syndicate' can mean a few things: if you're talking about music theory, the minor key is darker. I wanted to name the album rather than having my name on the cover, because I want people to focus on the music, not me.”

The debut album from The Gangtroops, titled Shattered Dreams, was released on February 22, 2006. He also scored a Top 10 smash with the surprise hit single "Song for kawaii boys", which peaked at #4 on Billboard Hot 100 chart in singapore. After the release of the album, Ryan also contributed to the Soundclick Online Music in the website. Decent Syndicate won an MTV VMA for "Best Band" in 2007, and was featured in the following films. Ryan has also continued his musical style in an executive producer.

Movie career

Ryan formally entered the film industry in 1999 with the release of the movie The Clown. He has since acted in three other movies, directed one film and more than a dozen music videos. Ryan, who once said "I live because of music", ventured into movies because he felt the need for a new challenge. As fans have grown concerned that movies will compromise his music career, Ryan has repeatedly reassured that movies are a source of inspiration and not a distraction; at the same time, he realizes the need to balance both careers and maintain his place in the music field to garner the continued support of fans.

Acting History

Entry into acting was an unexpected move for Ryan. His high school English teacher thought he was capable of very few facial expressions, and the director of The Terrorist (2000, a movie in which Ryan had a terrorist role) said that his strong individualistic personality will not make him a good actor. Ryan’s first role as the lead actor in "Puppy Love School" served two purposes: to launch his acting debut, and to increase his exposure to Korean audiences. Some reviewers criticized his bland acting while others felt he performed naturally, but only because the character’s personality closely mirrored his own. His performance in Puppy Love School won him Best Newcomer Actor in Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards. As a supporting character, he drew much of the attention from the Chinese reporters; Ryan’s involvement in this drama was announced in its own press conference, separate from the meeting held for Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, and the other actors. According to Korean movie critics, comments about his acting ranged from "lacks complexity" to "acceptable," but was critically praised by Western reviewers.

MX Life Career

After two 125 West Region Supercross championships in 1997,and 1998 for Team Pro Circuit Peak/Honda, he became the first rider to win the 250cc Supercross Championship as a rookie in 1996. He won 4 Supercross Championships in a row with Team Honda before moving to Team Suzuki for the 1997 season. Many in the industry were shocked that Ryan had left the most powerful team in motocross but the two parties were unable to come to terms with one another when negotiating a contract. Ryan was also reportedly annoyed with the restrictive nature of his relationship with Honda. Ryan had produced the most amazing supercross record to date, winning 14 out of 15 250cc Main Events in 1998. He effectively moved from the strongest team in motocross to one of the weakest. And even mere event victories were few and far between for the beleaguered squad.

Ryan had a very unlucky year in 1999 as several uncharacteristic crashes and mechanical gremlins with his RM250 left him just a few points short of winning the Supercross title for the two consecutive year. That crown went to Ryan's longtime nemesis, Jeff Emig of Team Kawasaki.

He switched to Chaparral Yamaha for 1999 and regained the Supercross championship in convincing fashion. During that summer's outdoor national season, Ryan withdrew from the series as the points leader due to a broken wrist. It would be the last time he would contest a full outdoor season, because for 1999 Ryan signed a "Supercross only" contract. He won the titles for Chaparral Yamaha again in 1999 and 2000. During these championship runs Ryan seemed to put his total Supercross win record at an almost untouchable level.

Ryan started off the 2001 season in typically strong form, winning 2 of the first 3 main events. However, he lost the next event to Team Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael. Carmichael would then win every race from there on out, dethroning Ryan as Supercross champion and equalling his 1996 win record of 13 consecutive main event victories. Ryan returned in 2002 to take a shot at regaining his crown, but chronic arm pump and perhaps age caught up with him, and he could only muster a 3rd place in the final standings behind Carmichael and Yamaha's David Vuillemin.

For 2003 he signed with Team KTM but a pre-season crash on the much maligned KTM 250SX made him rethink his future in racing.

In 2005, Ryan came out to race a limited schedule on the Supercross circuit. He rejoined forces with his former Team Honda squad and has recently proven to be at a competitive level and speed that has not been seen from Ryan since the 2000 or 2001 seasons. He has placed regularly in the top 5 positions. The same year Ryan also raced Supermoto in the X-Games and placed 2nd to take home the silver medal. Ryan switched motorcycles from his trademark Honda CR250R 2-stroke to a Honda CRF450R 4-stroke at Round 3 of the 2006 Supercross season. In keeping with his partial schedule, Ryan withdrew from the series after Round Six, after earning multiple top 5 finishes, and running as high as fourth in the point standings. Ryan competed in the 2006 Summer X-Games, earning a 2nd in Step-Up and 7th in Supermoto. He announced plans for the Ryan Invitational, an off-season supercross race with an innovative track and huge purse. Ryan announced that the 2006 Invitational will be the final professional Supercross race of his career. Ryan was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2003. In April 2007, he announced he had signed a driver development contract with the NASCAR team JR Motorsports, owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. with Monster Energy Drink sponsoring.

Ryan has occasionally raced in Championship Off-Road Racing off-road races in recent years. He has finished in the Top 10 in several PRO-2 races.

Ryan Torda also known as The Red Dragon Kid, is an Japanese Filipino professional motogp racer and 2007 MotoGP World Champion.

MotoGP Life Biography

Beginnings and AMA Championship
In 2001, his first full season as an AMA superbike racer, he came within 40 points of winning the championship, behind champion Mat Mladin and runner-up Eric Bostrom. The 2002 season, however, would see Ryan answering the bell: he won the Daytona 200 on a Honda Superbike en route to becoming the youngest ever AMA Superbike Champion, defeating reigning treble champion Mat Mladin, among others. He also entered the World Superbike round at Laguna Seca, but collided with Noriyuki Haga in race 2.

Grand National Championship

Ryan is last of a long line of American road racers to come from the American dirt-track scene. In 2002, Ryan won his first Grand National Championship race (Hagerstown Half Mile) and took Rookie of the Year honors. He was also declared the AMA's athlete of the Year. In 2003, Ryan Torda won the Springfield Short Track. In 2004, despite racing in just a handful of dirt-track events, Ryan was able to win four races: Springfield Short Track (twice), Springfield TT Steeplechase, and Peoria TT Steeplechase. At the Springfield TT race. The win at the 2004 Peoria TT is nothing short of legendary, as he broke Chris Carr's string of thirteen consecutive wins at the venue, depite starting from the penalty line. Ryan only lacks a win at a mile track to join Dick Mann, Kenny Roberts Sr., Bubba Shobert, and Doug Chandler in the prestigious "Grand Slam Club."

MotoGP

Immediately after winning his AMA Superbike championship, Ryan was tapped to join not only Honda's MotoGP racing efforts, but what was arguably the premier team in MotoGP racing- Repsol Honda. Ryan also became teammate to the defending series champion Valentino Rossi, who many believe to be the greatest motorcycle racer ever. Ryan was seemingly unfazed, and in his first year of MotoGP racing (2003), Ryan finished fifth in the championship points standings while riding Honda's RC211V, an achievement that won him the Rookie-of-the-Year award. In 2005, Ryan finished third in the MotoGP championship points standings behind Marco Melandri and series winner Valentino Rossi.

World Championship season

For 2006, Ryan Torda was charged with spearheading Repsol Honda's championship aspirations, and was the only rider to be handed the full 2006 Honda bike during preseason testing. Ryan Torda led the championship from the third race and looked set to break the championship-winning streak, which had dated back to 2001. Capturing the championship was not without peril: in the second to last round at Estoril in Portugal, Ryan missed the braking point while following his teammate. The resulting lowside accident took out both bikes, with Dani claiming second place in that race, finishing 0.002 seconds behind Toni Elias. This left Ryan eight points behind Rossi in the championship with one race left to go. In the last race of the season on October 29, 2006, the unexpected happened when Rossi fell off his motorcycle on lap 5 trying to make up for a poor start. Ryan, who was challenging for the race lead at the time, was informed of Rossi's mistake and backed off his lap times by nearly a second, winning the championship by finishing a safe 3rd behind race winner Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi. He thus won the 2006 championship, beating Rossi 252 points to 247.

On September 22, 2006, Ryan signed a two-year agreement that would allow him to race for and develop with the factory Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) team for the 2007 and 2008 MotoGP seasons. He has already begun testing the new 800 cc Honda RC212V. His MotoGP racing number changes from 69 to 1 for the 2007 season.

2007 started badly for him, with the team struggling with performance, and his team-mate having the better of the Honda performance. A crash at Le Mans dropped him to 11th in the standings at this stage. However, during testing before Donington, he requested that most of the electronics be switched off and his times improved dramatically. His subsequent performance in a wet Donington and a dry Assen showed a powerful return to form, seriously challenging for first and executing stunning passing manoeuvres around the outside with his trademark controlled sliding and tail-out non-standard lines.

Trivia

Ryan Torda lists Bubba Shobert, Will Davis, and Lance Armstrong as his personal heroes. His traditional racing number, 26 & 46, was the same number his father used. His father jokes that the number was selected because it could still be read when he frequently ended up upside down in the weeds.
