History

College Hunks Hauling Junk began as a summer project in Washington, D.C. by founders Nick Friedman and Omar Soliman. They borrowed a cargo van that belonged to Soliman's mother and used it to haul away peoples unwanted items for a fee.[4] In 2004 while attending The University of Miami, Soliman wrote a business plan for College Hunks Hauling Junk. He entered the plan into the annual Leigh Rothschild Business Plan Contest and ended up winning first place and $10,000.[5] Upon graduating from college Friedman and Soliman decided to start the company on a full scale in Washington, DC. In its first two years, the company hauled away more than 4000 tons of junk, and as of 2010 was hauling away an average of 10,000 tons each year.[6] Soliman and Friedman donated a portion of revenues to College Bound and the College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving Scholarship Fund.[7] In 2008 the company headquarters moved to Tampa, Florida and in March opened up a call and training center for franchises.

The company was acquired by full-service waste management and recycling company 1-800-Junk-USA in August 2011. The companies continue to operate separately with the same top management teams that were in place prior to the merger. [8]

Media

In September 2008, Friedman and Soliman tried to but failed to secure funding from investors for a new business concept called College Foxes Packing Boxes, a full service packing and professional organizing company.[9] The company attempted to gain an investment of 250k for 25% for the "foxes", on the ABC investment television show Shark Tank.[10] The investors requested equity in the Hunks, and their offer on the Hunks was $1,000,000 for 10%. The show's investors ultimately rejected the offer, except for Robert Herjavec who offered 250K for 50% of the Foxes and 10% of the Hunks which was later rejected. Soliman and Friedman were contestants in the third season premiere of Bravo TVs Millionaire Matchmaker hosted by Patti Stanger. [11] Nate Berkus, host of The Nate Berkus Show on ABC brought Friedman and Soliman with College Hunks team member Kevin Burns to talk about the business, and to present Burns with a prize of $5000 and the 2010 Hunk of the Year award in January 2011.[12]

Friedman and Soliman, with co-author Daylle Deanna Schwartz, published the book Effortless Entrepreneur that describes the events encountered while establishing College Hunks Hauling Junk and provides insight and advice for those starting new ventures.[13] The book, published by Three Rivers Press in September 2010, was named #7 on the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) list of the best business books of 2010.[14] The book includes lessons that Soliman and Friedman learned while building College Hunks into a national company that are now principles they follow while running the business.[15]

Awards

The company was the 2004 winner of the Leigh Rothschild Entrepreneurship Competition,[16] won several American Marketing Association awards in 2007[17] and was named Corporate Partner of the Year 2008 by the National Association of Professional Organizers in Washington, DC.[18] After being featured on Oprah's Clean Up Your Messy House Tour in 2008,[19] the company appeared on the Inc magazine's 500 Fastest Growing Companies list in 2009.[20] College Hunks Hauling Junk was ranked #30 on Entrepreneur Magazine's Top 50 New Franchise Rankings in 2009.[21]
