The Mission of the Electrical Engineering Department is based on ASPIRE.

Achieve excellence in active teaching/learning methodologies. Selecting the up to date courses that suits most educational and industrial requirements. Provide state of the art laboratories with the novel methods of virtual labs as well as emphasizing the classical method of bred board and color code reading. Initiate the contact with the local industry so that the student will cover a great training period and mingle with the working life paste. Recent research developments are not to be missed. As we focus on obtaining the latest information from on line journals and periodicals. Enhance the student thinking process on evaluating real life engineering problems; analyze them and providing alternative solutions.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Program Mission:

All processes, facilities, human resource, administration and financial resource whatever so is involved in modeling a mechanical engineer to meet the requirements of a modern industry, government sector or self entrepreneurship development is the mission of this department. Therefore, to incorporate all the teaching techniques, curriculum meeting ABET requirements, laboratory practices, team work culture, academic atmosphere and object oriented work culture, the department will be looking forward to inhabit resourceful faculty, skilled technicians and ` administrative support. Further, the department will be establishing modern mechanical engineering laboratories, informative and state of the art library, computational facilities, and modern class room teaching supports. Efforts will be made to regulate the financial resource in the optimal and result oriented investment. There are various disciplines under the Mechanical Engineering major which includes:

1) Solid/Structural Mechanics and Materials Science,

2) Thermo-fluids/Aerodynamics, and

3) Physical Response, Mechanical Design, and Mechanisms.

Research laboratories will be established through the coordination of research funding organizations. Collaborated research programs will be initiated with the Research and Development Organizations within the country and abroad.

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

IntroductionThe department offers a four-year curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. A modern mechanical engineering curriculum must prepare students for professional practice in a broad spectrum of industrial activities. Today's mechanical engineer must be soundly educated in the mechanics of solids and fluids, thermodynamics and heat transfer, the science of materials, and the principles and techniques of mechanical engineering design. The undergraduate program provides this necessary foundation while retaining a flexibility that permits students to specialize to a limited extent in one of their particular interests. At the end of the four-year program, the student's education and training enable them to assume professional status as practicing engineers.

Mechanical engineers study the behavior of solids, liquids and gases when forces are applied to them and when they are heated and cooled. They learn how to convert energy efficiently from one form to another. Using this knowledge base, mechanical engineers play key roles in the design of transportation systems, including automobiles and space vehicles; environmental control systems, and processes, including robots; energy conversion technology, including engines and power plants; biomedical devices; and the list goes on. The tremendous breadth of mechanical engineering gives the mechanical engineer access to employment in every major industry.

Program Objectives:The broad educational objectives of the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering is to provide a solid foundation of mathematical, scientific and engineering knowledge and to develop the basic engineering skills that will serve students throughout their careers.

Detailed Program Objectives:

Objective 1: Foundation: To provide students with a strong foundation in mechanical engineering sciences and design methodologies that emphasizes the application of the fundamental mathematical, scientific and engineering principles in the areas of mechanical engineering.

Objective 2: Skills & Tools: To provide students with skills to enter the workplace well prepared in the core competencies listed below:(a) Design and modeling experience(b) Open-ended problem solving ability(c) Experimental and data analysis techniques(d) Teamwork experience(e) Oral, written, and multimedia communication skills(f) Experience with contemporary computing systems and methodology

Objective 3: Awareness & Professional Ethics: To provide students with issues relevant to mechanical engineering practice, including ethical, professional, social and global awareness, the impact of mechanical engineering on society, the importance of continuing education and life-long learning in both technical and non-technical areas.The Mechanical Engineering curriculum, faculty, facilities are to be developed to the extent that this program is attractive for the incumbents. The program must ensure quality education to be provided to the students. This will equip students with the professional capabilities like creativity, decision making and problem solving techniques. The aim of the program is to provide technical training such that students could build their engineering status which will attract employers of government and private sector.

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum has been developed to satisfy ABET requirements. The standard text books with active learning techniques have been adapted in the curriculum. The department is in the process of acquiring a rich journal-on-line library to support research. Efforts are being made to establish a high power computational facility with a dense internet channel system. Besides few faculty members already present in the department, more faculty members of high educational caliber are being sought. These all preparations and efforts are being aimed at the best out put from the department in terms of highly skillful and academic engineer. Process evaluation and assessment lay down by ABET has been implemented to assess the performance of faculty, students, facilities, administrative cooperation and other connected areas. There are guide lines laid down by ABET for the faculty to transfer knowledge to the students. These instructions are being practiced in the department.

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum provides a strong base in the main areas of mechanical engineering during the first three years of study. Moreover, the curriculum is also augmented by a number of mechanical engineering and technical elective courses in one or more branches of the mechanical engineering profession. It contains the required general education courses in the areas of mathematics, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, Islamic, and English. It balances theory with application and provides practical experience with laboratory sessions as applicable. The program is to give the student a strong mathematical background to enable him to address research-type problems or other problems encountered in engineering practice which require detailed analytical and/or experimental studies. The Senior Design Project (ME 491 and ME 492) is a capstone design course which presents a student an opportunity to participate in a design team which operates in unstructured problem-solving situations. Every mechanical engineering science student is required to spend 8 weeks in summer training (ME 390, after junior year) to make use of his knowledge and to acquire valuable experience in an industrial environment, which may give him a fresh outlook for appropriately selecting his elective courses. The program prepares a student either for an industrial career or for graduate studies.

Senior Research ProjectsStudents are encouraged to participate in Senior Research Projects as soon as they have received training in the fundamentals appropriate for a given research area. A sample of some interested students could develop interests in: Electro-Mechanical Systems, Production/Manufacturing, Dynamics/Vibrations, Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer, Computer-Aided Design, Turbo-machinery, Rotorcrafts and Materials Engineering.

Mechanical engineers have traditionally been concerned with a great variety of technologies, such as energy conversion, machine design, instrumentation and control of physical processes, and control of the environment. Mechanical engineers fill essential roles in the entire spectrum of industrial enterprises, including even such apparently "non-mechanical" ones as the aerospace, chemical, computer, and electrical power industries. Some new and exciting areas currently demanding mechanical engineer’s expertise include artificial organs (hearts, lungs, kidneys) and prosthetic limb and joint design, high-performance composite materials development, flexible manufacturing, mechanical design, automation, and the control of industrial environmental pollution.

Program Outcomes:A mechanical engineering graduate from this department is expected to have acquired following capabilities and abilities:• Formulate any problem using the basic laws of science, mathematics and engineering.• Analyze the formulated problem and produce a design which is optimal with regards to feasibility, dimensions and the cost.• Think beyond conventional laws to invent new ways and methods of design which result in creativity. • Have leadership qualities, facilities, resources and environment for useful and result oriented objectives.• Work in a team and contribute efficiently with cohesive attitude and obedience for the fruitful results.• Have communication skills to demonstrate the views of his Undertaking to the team members, companions, the market and the society. • Demonstrate drafting qualities by writing meaningful, consistent, well connected and standard drafts for his undertaking. • Demonstrate highest degree of discipline in living, interaction with the surroundings and in the work place.• Have capability to allocate and focus great visions for the concern to which he adapts as work place.by Dr. Yasir M.
