Frederick Erdmann, Prince of Anhalt-Pless

Frederick Erdmann, Prince of Anhalt-Pless

Frederick Erdmann, Prince of Anhalt-Pless (b. Köthen, 27 October 1731 - d. Pless, 12 December 1797), was a German prince member of the House of Ascania and ruler of the Principality of Anhalt-Köthen.

He was the third but second (and youngest) surviving son of Augustus Louis, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen by his second wife Christine Johanna Emilie, daughter of Erdmann II, Count of Promnitz-Pless.

Life

The prospects of Frederick Erdmann to inheritance or joint rulership over Köthen were little, but his situation change in 1765, when his infant cousin Count William of Promnitz, heir apparent of Pless died. His uncle Johannes Erdmann, Count of Promnitz-Pless, without any other male heir, decided to give him the County as inheritance anticipated; but the towns of Jannowitz, Peterswaldau and Kreppelhof were given to Christian Frederick, Count of Stolberg-Wernigerode (nephew of Frederick Erdmann and grandnephew of Johannes Erdmann).

After received this inheritance, Frederick Erdmann moved to Pless and asumed the title of "Prince of Anhalt-Pless", some times also called "Anhalt-Köthen-Pless".
