Romanian New Wave

The Romanian New Wave ( _ro. Noul val românesc) is a blanket term applied to films made in Romania in the mid and late 2000s. The term came about after the success of a numerous Romanian films at international festivals in this period, including 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which won the Palme d'Or.

Themes

The majority of films in this genre are set in the late 1980s, during the communist regime Nicolae Ceauşescu, and explore the struggles and resilience of life under dictatorship. However, some films, such as "California Dreamin'" and "The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu", are set later, being more concerned with the transition to free-market capitalism and democracy and its consequences on Romanian society.

Aesthetically, the films of the Romanian New Wave are united by an austere, realist and often minimalist style. Furthermore, black humour tends to feature prominently. [ [http://www.melbournefilmfestival.com.au/2008/romanian_wave] ]
