Prestressed structure

Prestressed structure is the one whose overall integrity, stability and security depend, primarily, on a "prestressing". "Prestressing" means the intentional creation of permanent stresses in a structure for the purpose of improving its performance under various service conditionscite book|title= Design of Prestressed Concrete|author=Nilson, Arthur H.|date=1987|publisher=John Wiley & Sons|isbn=0471830720] .

There are the following basic types of prestressing:
*Pre-compression (mostly, with the own weight of a structure)
*Pretensioning with high-strength embedded tendons
*Post-tensioning with high-strength bonded or unbonded tendons [ [http://www.seaint.org/seaocconvention/convention1999/Proceedings/BP_Shield.pdf Sail-Rigging Blast-Protective Structural Shield] ] of buildings.

A beneficial idea of "prestressing" was, apparently, familiar to the ancient Rome architects; look, e.g., at the tall attic wall of Colosseum working as a press for the wall piers beneath.
