Lowell "River" Baldwin is a fictional character from the American soap opera "The Young and the Restless", portrayed by American actor Michael Gross from August 15 2008.

Character's background

Lowell Baldwin was first seen on-screen in August of 2008, but his past was several times discussed on the show prior to his appearance. Lowell was Gloria Bardwell's (Judith Chapman) ex-boyfriend with whom she had a son, Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc). Lowell left Gloria while Michael was still a child and was not seen since, but several reports indicated River committed a crime and that's why he was running away. Apparently, Lowell planted a bomb in a bank and a janitor that worked there got caught in the blast and was severely wounded. A witness saw Lowell fleeing the crime scene and Lowell's fingerprint was found on a piece of bomb casing which proved that Lowell was guilty of the bank bombing and was arrested. Gloria bailed Lowell out of prison, but then Lowell jumped bail and disappeared, possibly to Canada. Four months later, the wounded janitor died, which meant Lowell was now wanted for murder. The authorities are still looking for Lowell with that murder warrant.

Michael started a long search after his father but ended up finding a man that was pretending to be his father. Having already given up hope, Michael was shocked when he met Lowell (now going by River) at an Ashram in Malibu while he was attending the wedding of his half brother Kevin Fisher (Greg Rikaart) and Jana Hawkes (Emily O'Brien).

Michael and River finally talked, but Michael later left the Ashram. Michael decided not to turn River in to the authorities. Lauren Baldwin (Tracey E. Bregman), Michael's wife, later tried to contact River but learned he left the Ashram. Michael was surprised when River appeared on his doorstep a few weeks later. River wanted to meet Fenmore and get on better ground with Michael, and he spent a night chatting about the past with his former lover Gloria. Gloria's jealous husband Jeff informed the authorities about River's location and he ended up getting arrested. Michael was stunned when River's daughter Eden (Erin Sanders) appeared in town.
