Econet Wireless

Econet Wireless

Zimbabwe's principal mobile or cell phone company was established by the Zimbabwean businessman, Strive Masiyiwa. It is now the nation's largest cell phone network having captured 43% of the market share. Econet Wireless also operates networks in Lesotho, Botswana, and Burundi.

New Zealand

Econet was planning a launch in Auckland CBD, New Zealand in 2006. It will eventually build 410 transmitters in four cities. It will use the W-CDMA technology, the 3G technology also used by Vodafone New Zealand. The technology is supplied by Huawei. It will use the access code 028. Analysts predict it needs to undercut the incumbent by 50% in order to gain market share because in a country with 4 million people, 3.2 million of them adults, there are 3.6 million cellphones. In the meantime the company changed name to NZ Communications, in December 2007 it finally acquired own spectrum [http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10480768] and also entered into a roaming agreement with Vodafone NZ [http://www.nzherald.co.nz/category/story.cfm?c_id=93&objectid=10480653] .
