University of Maryland School of Pharmacy

University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, which was founded in 1841, is the 4th oldest pharmacy school and the only pharmacy school in Maryland state. Being consistently ranked among the top 10 pharmacy schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in recent years, the school has been striving to improve the health and well-being of society by aiding in the discovery, development, and use of medicines.

The School of Pharmacy has three departments: Pharmacy Practice and Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Health Services Research. The Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science promotes the health and well being of the public by advancing the practice of pharmacy and generating and disseminating new knowledge related to pharmacy practice and drug use. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducts state-of-the-art research and discovery in the areas of cellular and chemical biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biopharmaceutics and drug delivery. The Pharmaceutical Health Services Research Department provides teaching, service, and scholarly activities related the behavioral sciences, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and regulatory issues.

In addition to cutting edge research in drug delivery mechanisms, cost impact studies, basic drug discovery and development, and disease management, the School engages in a wide variety of professional practice activities, partnering with over 200 community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other agencies to provide services to citizens and practitioners around the State and across the nation.

Educational Programs

The four year professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program was started in 1993, focusing on patient-centered care to maximize medication therapy outcomes and assure safe medication use. At least two years of prepharmacy education are required for admission; most matriculants hold a baccalaureate degree. Over 200 community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, government agencies, and pharmaceutical companies serve as practice sites for our students as part of our experiential learning program. The School also offers graduate studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Health Research.

The School houses seven centers which provide public education, conduct research, and link clinical and academic activities to help strengthen the public health infrastructure across the State of Maryland. While their areas of expertise vary, their common goal is to help provide quality health care and training to improve the health of the citizens of the State and across the Nation:

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and University of Maryland Medical Center Department of Pharmacy currently offer 15 different residency/fellowship opportunities. Seven programs are accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
