Nottingham London Road Low Level railway station

Nottingham London Road Low Level railway station

Nottingham London Road Low Level railway station was the former Great Northern Railway terminus in Nottingham. [British Railways Pre-Grouping Atlas and Gazatteer.]

It was originally the Nottingham Great Northern railway station but was renamed when the Great Central Railway opened Victoria station in 1900.

GNR trains originally used the Midland station in Nottingham, but there were frequent disputes, especially when the GNR began running through trains from London via Grantham in a shorter time than the MR could manage. To solve the problem, the GNR opened their own station served by a new line from near Netherfield, adjacent to the Midland line whose tracks they had previously used.

From 1879, the station was also used by trains of the London and North Western Railway running from Northampton via the Great Northern and London and North Western Joint Railway.

When the Great Central Railway opened Victoria station in 1900, the GNR accepted the GCR's invitation to share the station and built a connecting line. This left the original line east of London Road station and ran adjacent to it but gaining height in order to connect with the GCR's line. A new station was built on the viaduct where the new line passed the old station, and was called London Road High Level, at the same time the original station was renamed London Road Low Level.

All GNR trains were diverted to Victoria, but the LNWR trains continued terminating at London Road Low Level until 1944, when they too were diverted to Victoria. Low Level station then closed as a passenger station.
