Belfield Estate

Belfield Estate

Belfield Estate was a 104 acre area of land in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, much of which is now a part of La Salle University’s campus. The land was originally owned by the American painter Charles Willson Peale who cultivated, and frequently used as inspiration, the extensive gardens on the estate grounds. Belfield was later purchased by William Logan Fisher and given to his daughter Sarah upon her marriage to William Wister. The property was handed down through the Wister family until it and other estates were purchased by La Salle University. Peale’s original mansion ‘Belfield’ now serves as living quarters for the President of La Salle. [http://www.lasalle.edu/commun/history/articles/remarkablewisters.htm Butler, James A.
