The Old Mill Restaurant

The Old Mill Restaurant

=History=

The Old Mill Restaurant is located in Historic Downtown Acworth. John Cowan originally built this building in 1870 after he struck gold in the Missouri River which is significant because before the gold search he tells his partners it’s their last chance. John Cowan went west in the late 1850’s to seek fortune in Montana’s Black Hills. The “Last Chance Gulch” was one of the largest gold discoveries in the history of the United States. He returned home and built “The Mill” which was originally for manufacturing flour called “Lynette Flour”. John Cowan, Frank Cowan, Bill Palmer and Henry Rusk became known as “The Four Georgians”. The Mill mysteriously burnt down in 1992 and left nothing but scrub trees and vines’ covering the building and was rebuilt into the restaurant. This restaurant is important to the City of Acworth because it has been there since the 1800's. It is one of the few buildings that have actually been in Acworth for that many years they created a restaurant where people could appreciate the historical background that took place. John Cowan returned to Acworth a very wealthy man and became a much respected businessman in the community of Acworth.
