Newry City and Down District Council

Newry City and Down District Council is a proposed Northern Irish local government district. Under the latest decision by the Review of Public Administration the district would be created by merging Newry and Mourne District Council and Down District Council, and by transferring the remaining area of Slieve Croob into the new district.

The new district will incorporate all of the Mourne Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in County Down, as well as the City of Newry and parts of south Armagh, and will have an extensive coastline stretching from Strangford Lough to Carlingford Lough, and border counties Louth and Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. The district would have an electorate of 107,233.cite web | title=Provisional Recommendations of the Local Government Boundaries Commissioner for Northern Ireland| work=LGBC | url=http://www.lgbc-ni.org/index/provisional_recommendations.htm | accessdate=2008-09-26] The name of the new District was announced on September 17. The first election for the new district was due to take place in May 2009, but on April 25, 2008, Shaun Woodward, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland announced that the scheduled 2009 district council elections were to be postponed until 2011.
