- White Air (extreme sports festival)
White Air is an extreme sports festival held annually on the
Isle of Wight atYaverland pay and display car park. The event usually takes place around September to October, although dates often vary. The 2008 event was a three day event from 19th-21st September.cite web|url=http://www.whiteair.co.uk/section/festivals/event_reports|title=White Air 2008 event report|publisher=www.whiteair.co.uk|accessdate=2008-09-28] So far, the event has been running for 12 years but after recent festivals has suffered heavy criticism due to the close proximity to local houses, often putting the events future on its current site into question. Fresh rumours of a move toBrighton occurred shortly after the 2008 eventcite web|url=http://www.iwcp.co.uk/News/Silence_over_White_Air_move_claim.aspx|title=Isle of Wight County Press - Silence over White Air move claim|publisher=www.iwcp.co.uk|accessdate=2008-09-27] which was later confirmed by festival organiser Nigel Howell.cite web|url=http://ventnorblog.com/white-air-moving-to-brighton-exclusive/|title=Ventnor Blog - White Air moving to Brighton|publisher=www.ventnorblog.com|accessdate=2008-09-28]Criticism
Particularly in recent years the event has suffered heavy criticism by locals due to its close proximity to housing and the level of noise it produces. The 2007 event was moved from October, to a new slot in August, and extended to a week long. This caused great criticism as money was lost from parking charges from the pay and display car park the event takes place in.cite web|url=http://www.iwcp.co.uk/News/WHITE_AIR_WILL_GO_TO_MAINLAND_1.aspx|title=Isle of Wight County Press - White Air will go to mainland|publisher=www.iwcp.co.uk|accessdate=2008-09-28] To help solve this the dates were later changed for the 2008 festival to a three-day event in September.cite web|url=http://www.iwcp.co.uk/News/EXTREME_SPORT_FESTIVAL_DATE_MOVED.aspx|title=Isle of Wight County Press - Extreme sport festival date moved|publisher=www.iwcp.co.uk|accessdate=2008-09-28]
However, later music taking place at the 2008 event again caused anger with local residents in Yaverland. Music was originally licenced to take place until 11pm on Saturday, but White Air organisers requested this be extended to 1am due to changes of entertainment provision at the site.cite web|url=http://www.iwcp.co.uk/News/Anger_over_late_music_at_sport_event.aspx|title=Isle of Wight County Press - Anger over late music at sport event|publisher=www.iwcp.co.uk|accessdate=2008-09-28]
