Carpet plot

A Carpet plot is the graphic representation of occurrences in their temporal relation (eg hourly record of outdoor temperatures or power measurement over the time). Each occurrence is register in a Cartesian coordinate system like in a Scatter plot, but the x and y axis have a different timely resolution. The value of the measurement itself is codded with a color (sometime it looks like a carpet).

It is possible to display very large amount of measure points. It is easy to recognize maximal and minimal points, or even recurrently events.

In this example, measurements were taken during a period of one year (4 Measure points per hour). The data is shown as a carpet plot. A column contains the values for a day from 0:00 o'clock until 23:45 o'clock. The days are side by side. Despite the high number of measure points (about 35000) it is possible to distinguish regularly occurring patterns or variations on some days quickly.
