Ma.gnolia is a social bookmarking web site comparable to Delicous or Simpy. A prominent feature that distinguishes it from other similar web sites is the "group" feature, which allows several users to share a common collection of bookmarks. The group is managed by a selected number of group managers. Users may rate bookmarks and mark bookmarks as private.

Integration

The design of the web site allows for integration of the service into other applications via a REST API, or an similar to the delicous API [http://ma.gnolia.com/developers] . The web browser Flock supports Ma.gnolia alongside other services out of the box [cite web |url=http://flock.com/supported-services |title=Flock Supported Services |publisher=Flock |accessdate=2008-09-30] .

Open Standards

Ma.gnolia supports open standards and is often among early adopters of these standards. The bookmarking service provides support for several Microformats: In July and August 2006, among other information, support for MicroID and XFN was announced on the Ma.gnolia blog [cite web |url=http://ma.gnolia.com/blog/2006/07/06/a-small-update |title=A Small (?) Update |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Larry Halff |date=2006-07-06 |publisher=Ma.gnolia] [cite web |url=http://ma.gnolia.com/blog/2006/08/21/a-microadvance-in-our-microformats |title=A Microadvance In Our Microformats |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Larry Halff |date=2006-08-21 |publisher=Ma.gnolia] . The announcements were well received by the community around online reputation management services [cite web |url=http://blog.claimid.com/2006/07/microid-and-magnolia-working-together/ |title=MicroID and Ma.gnolia - working together |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Terrell Russell |date=2006-07-07 |publisher=ClaimID] [cite web |url=http://microid.org/blog/?p=9 |title=Another sighting |accessdate=2008-09-29 |date=2006-07-06 |publisher=MicroID] .

In December 2007, Ma.gnolia collaborated with Engagd [cite web |url=http://ma.gnolia.com/blog/2007/12/17/your-attention-in-your-hands |title=Your Attention in Your Hands |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Todd Sieling |date=2008-12-17 |publisher=Ma.gnolia] to let users build attention profiles from their bookmarks [cite web |url=http://danielabarbosa.blogspot.com/2007/12/additional-support-for-apml-this-time.html |title=Additional support for APML this time from Ma.gnolia |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Daniela Barbosa |date=2007-12-21] . In March 2008, Ma.gnolia changed its join and sign-in pages to require users to sign up with a verified identity [cite web |url=http://blog.vidoop.com/archives/82 |title=One incremental step for Ma.gnolia, one large step for OpenID |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Kevin Fox |publisher=Vidoop |date=2008-03-26 ] using OpenID. M2

In August 2008 Larry Halff announced a ground-up rewrite of the service called "M2" [cite web |url=http://ma.gnolia.com/blog/2008/08/22/the-open-road-ahead |title=The Open Road Ahead |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Larry Halff |date=2008-08-22 |publisher=Ma.gnolia] [cite web |url=http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10023422-2.html |title=Bookmarking service Magnolia opens up its source to all |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Josh Lowensohn |date=2008-08-22 |publisher=CNET Networks] . Parts of the new version are going to be provided under a open source license. It is planned that custom installations of Ma.gnolia can be federated with other installations or the Ma.gnolia website itself. This distributed aspect is the main difference [cite web |url=http://mashable.com/2008/08/22/magnolia-open-source/ |title=Ma.gnolia Goes Open Source; Wants to be the WordPress of Social Bookmarking |accessdate=2008-09-29 |author=Adam Ostrov |date=2008-08-22| publisher=Mashable ] to a [http://blog.reddit.com/2008/06/reddit-goes-open-source.html similar project] by Reddit. The open source aspects of M2 are published at [http://ma.gnolia.org Ma.gnolia.org] .
