Roberto de Oliveira Campos (1917-2001) - Brazilian economist and diplomat, one of the leading propagandists of conservative economic policies in Brazil, and finantial tsar of the military dictatorship as Minister Of Planning for the government of General Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco (1964-1967).
Campos was born in Cuiaba, in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. He initially planned to enter the priesthood, and received degrees in Philosophy and Theology from the Catholic Seminary of Guaxupé. He extended his graduate studies at George Washington University and New York University. In 1939 Campos entered the Brazilian foreign service.
Later, he served in a number of capacities, as Brazilian ambassador to the U.S. and to the UK, as cabinet minister, and legislator.Present himself as a promoter of "pragmatic, democratic nationalism" in pre-dictatorship Brazil, he afterwards sided with the disctatorship and rejected nationalism, being one of the staunchest advocates of conservative internal economic policies and an unconditionally pro-American foreign policy.
