Feitian space suit

A Feitian space suit (zh-sp|s=飞天号航天服|p=fēi tiān hào háng tiān fù) is a Chinese spacesuit that was developed for the Shenzhou 7. Astronaut Zhai Zhigang wore it during China's first-ever extra-vehicular activity (EVA) on September 7, 2008. The Feitian spacesuit was modelled after the Orlan-M spacesuit developed by Russia.cite web|url=http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-06/01/content_6182498.htm|title =China's astronaut outfitters design material for spacewalk suits|publisher= Xinhua|date=2007-06-01|accessdate=2007-12-02 | last=Xiao | first=Jie] The two kinds of suits are similar in shape and volume and are designed for spacewalks of up to seven hours, providing oxygen and allowing for the excretion of bodily waste.

The suit is reported to have cost $4.4 million, and weighs convert|120|kg|abbr=on. The name "Fēi tiān" literally and separately means "flying" and "sky" in Mandarin [cite web |url=http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601080&sid=aZJYoiU9yivw |title=China, Following Astronauts' Return, Plans Space Lab for 2011 |last=Johnson |first=Ed |publisher=Bloomberg |date=Sept. 29 2008] . It is a reference to the apsara, translated as "feitian", or the "flying deva", in Chinese, and most famously depicted in Chinese art in the grottoes of Dunhuang.
