She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto. She married her husband, Trent University physics professor Alan Slavin, in 1967. She is extensively involved in issues relating to the environment, social justice, and nuclear disarmament, and she has been a long-time member of the Kawartha chapter of the Canadian group Project Ploughshares. In 1994, Slavin was one of 30 persons chosen to monitor the elections in South Africa with Oxfam-Canada. She has been a prominent participant in vigils protesting the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and is chair of the Peterborough Coalition for Social Justice.

Slavin has sought public office in the past often, but has never been elected. She was the NDP candidate for Peterborough in the 1984 federal election, and finished third against Progressive Conservative Bill Domm. She ran again in the 2004 federal, and finished third against Liberal Peter Adams. Slavin also sought election to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the elections of 1985 and 1987, as a candidate of the Ontario New Democratic Party. She finished second on both occasions. In 2006 she was the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate for Peterborough for the 39th federal election, finishing third against Conservative Dean Del Mastro, taking 25.67% of the vote share.

In the 2006 Ontario municipal elections Linda ran for Mayor of Peterborough, Ontario. She came in second place during the race, losing to Paul Ayotte by a margin of 26.22% of the vote.
